NEW YORK – The Columbia softball team (7-19, 2-2) combined for 21 hits on Saturday afternoon as they split with Brown (13-10, 2-2) to round out the first week of Ivy League action.
GAME ONE RECAP: Columbia 4, Brown 1
After being held scoreless in the first inning, the Lions got things going behind a two-out single by
Maura Lynch through the right side. Facing a 2-1 count,
Jordan Townsend was able to rip a RBI double down the left-field line, scoring Lynch to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
The Bears responded in the top of the fourth, however, picking up a run on a one-out RBI double to square the game up at 1-1.
Columbia's offense wouldn't stand down though as
Alexandra Yule and
Tonia Wu led off the bottom half of the frame with back-to-back singles before Townsend could send a RBI triple into the right-center gap to put the Lions back on top, 2-1.
After
Tonia Wu was able to sit the Bears down in order in the top of the fifth, the Lions were able to add another pair of runs across in the bottom of the fifth on a two-RBI single up the middle to make it a 4-1 advantage.
The Bears were able to put a runner on in each of the next two innings, but Wu was able to hold them down to secure the win and give the Lions their second conference victory.
Wu (5-5) picked up the win after throwing a complete game, allowing only one run on six hits while striking out three. Katie Orona took the loss after throwing five innings for the Bears, giving up three earned runs on 10 hits while striking out a pair.
Townsend led the Lions after going 2-for-3 with two RBI while Maddie Gott also went 2-for-3.
GAME TWO RECAP: Brown 7, Columbia 6
After being held scoreless over the first two innings, the Columbia offense came alive in the bottom of the third as it posted up three runs on three hits to take the early advantage.
Following a one-out single by
Kerry Cook,
Reilly Metzger was able to take first on a hit-by-pitch before Maddie Gott could work a seven-pitch walk to load the bases for the Lions. Facing a 0-1 count,
Taylor Troutt was able to send a two-RBI single through the right side before
Tonia Wu could blast a RBI double into left, giving the Lions a 3-0 lead.
The Bears responded back in the top of the fourth, however, picking up their first run of the game with a sac fly to left to cut the Columbia lead to 3-1.
Columbia bounced immediately back though as
Maura Lynch opened the bottom of the fourth with a base hit back up the middle. With the help of a sacrifice bunt and an illegal pitch to move Lynch to third,
Krystin Wong was able to send a RBI single into right to plate another run.
After a stolen base and a
Kerry Cook' single,
Reilly Metzger was able to lay down a safety squeeze, scoring Wong to give the Lions a 5-1 advantage.
Unfortunately the Brown offense responded back in the top of the fifth, picking up another run on a RBI double by Ashli Lotz to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Jordan Townsend wouldn't let the Lions' offense die, however, as she opened up the bottom of the sixth with her first career home run, sending a ball hard down the left-field line to make it a 6-2 Columbia lead heading into the seventh.
Down to their final three outs, the Bears began attacking with three-straight singles to open up the inning. After a sac fly to right to put a run across,
Kayla Maloney was able to get an infield fly for out number two.
Following an eight-pitch walk to load the bases, it was Annie Scarangella who was able to take a 1-1 pitch and send it down the left-field line for a grand slam to put the Bears in front, 7-6.
Unfortunately the Lions were unable to pick up a hit in the bottom of the seventh as they went down in order to give Brown the 7-6 win and force the split.
Kayla Maloney (1-5) takes the loss after only one inning of relief, giving up three earned runs on two hits while Gina Chieffallo (4-1) earns the win after 3.0 innings of relief, allowing only one run on two hits.
