SAN FRANCISCO — The Columbia volleyball team wrapped up its season-opening tournament with a pair of three-set defeats on Saturday. The Lions began their final day at the San Francisco Invitational by succumbing to Indiana's high-powered attack (19-25, 16-25, 14-25) and could not find their offense in the nightcap against Campbell (15-25, 19-25, 20-25).
Sophomore Lauren Wilkins came up with six kills while hitting .417 in the second match of Saturday's doubleheader. She played just two of the three sets, but her performance could not spark the rest of Columbia's (0-3) offense, which combined to hit .030.
Meanwhile, Campbell (2-4) was led the trio of Jenny Tait, Madison Linxwiler and Allena Heath at the net. Tait headed the group with eight kills on just 10 swings for an .800 attack percentage. Linxwiler and Heath also came away with eight kills apiece, connecting at rates of .357 and .400, respectively.
Despite the loss, Columbia did hold an 8-2 advantage on the block and tied the Camels with 34 digs. Sophomore Ara Peterson accounted for four of Columbia's blocks, while senior libero Cassie Wes was good for a match-high 13 digs. Campbell made up the difference on the attack, posting 13 more kills than the Lions and generating 15 extra opportunities.
The Camels forced Columbia into its first timeout just nine points into the match by jumping out to a 7-2 lead. The set never got any closer from there, with Campbell extending its lead to as many as 11 before taking the opener by 10.
The Lions were holding their ground midway through set two, trailing just 14-13 when Casey found the floor for her only kill of the frame. However, Campbell went on to score the next three points and completed 9-3 run with a commanding 23-16 cushion, which resulted in a two-set lead.
Columbia fell behind early the third but showed a lot of fight to claw its way back and eventually grab the lead. Already up in the match by two sets, Campbell imposed its will by scoring five of the first six points. The Camels led 13-7 when things began to turn in favor of Columbia. Peterson was the catalyst, as she slammed home a kill and followed it up by blocking Rachel Harty for to bring the margin to four.
Still trailing by four at 15-11, the Lions put together their best run of the match to take a lead. A block by Malesevic got it started, which was followed by a Grace Campbell kill and a combo block from Lauren Gurbach and Malesevic that gave Columbia a 16-15 advantage. The Columbia lead grew to 19-17 a few points later.
It all went downhill from there, as Campbell scored the next seven points and closed the match on an 8-1 run to earn the sweep.

Four straight Indiana points created the first bit of separation at 7-3 and the Lions never led. The set remained competitive when Lauren Wilkins found a kill to get Columbia within three, 14-11, but Indiana turned on the afterburners, scoring nine of the next 11 points to go up by 10. Ara Peterson came up with back-to-back block solos to stop the bleeding, but the Hoosiers polished off the set, 25-16, to take a two-set lead.

Again, the Lions were game through the first half of the set, but the high-powered Hoosier attack broke an 11-all tie with a 14-3 run to close out the match. Four of Indiana's points during the run came from service aces, including the game's final two points.
