
Columbia Dominant In 193-107 Homecoming Win Over Brown

NEW YORK – A dominating homecoming performance by the Columbia men's swimming & diving team marked the Lions return to Uris Pool on Saturday, Jan. 21 as they hosted Brown. The Lions won 13 of 16 events en route to a 193-107 victory over the Bears. Columbia has now put together four-straight dual-meet victories to improve to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the Ivy League.
The Lions got off to a hot start winning the opening six events. Jayden Pantel started the afternoon with his 29th consecutive victory in the three-meter dive behind a tally of 381.08. Kevin Fulton also placed third in the event with a score of 298.06.
The squad of Cole Stevens, Jae Park, Terry Li, and Mark Gullick followed with win in the 200 medley relay with a combined time of 1:29.99. Brian Tsau earned his third Ivy League win the 1000 freestyle behind a time of 9:29.79, finishing just ahead of Eric Ng who posted a runner-up time of 9:36.66. In the 200 freestyle, Nian-guo Liu defeats his fourth conference opponent with a time of 1:38.96 with teammate Nikita Bondarenko close behind with a second-place time of 1:39.91.
Cole Stevens finished a touch ahead of Michal Zyla (49.77) in the 100 backstroke with a first-place finish at 49.73. Jae Park lead another Columbia 1-2 punch in the 100 breaststroke with a winning time of 55.95, followed by Jack Smith in second place at 57.54.
The Lions placed three swimmers in the top four of the 200 butterfly, including runner-up Zach Pear at 1:50.29, Drew May in third place at 1:50.33 and Shane Brett in fourth place at 1:50.97. Pantel returned in the one-meter dive for yet another victory with a top score of 350.25, with Fulton in third place with a score of 261.68.
Kevin Fridfelt hit the wall first in the 100 freestyle behind a time of 45.47, finishing slightly ahead of runner-up Nian-guo Liu in 45.68. Zyla returned for a triumph in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:48.25, while Bondarenko grabbed the 500 freestyle crown in a time of 4:33.80 by finishing slightly in front of Tsau who clocked in at 4:36.19.
The 100 butterfly belonged to the Lions as Terry Li came with the victory at 49.66 and Frifeldt filling in second place at 49.70. Jae Park followed with his second crown of the afternoon in the 200 I.M. with an impressive winning-time of 1:51.04.
The Lions saved the top excitement for last as Gullick capped the meet with a comeback performance in the final leg of the 400 free relay to aid the victory of the team of Liu, Li and Frifeldt in a time of 3:03.75.
Up next, the Lions will host Navy on Friday, Jan. 27 in a home finale meet in Uris Pool at 2 p.m.
