ITA Northeast Regional Doubles Is All-Columbia Final

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For the second straight season, a pair of Columbia doubles teams advanced to the final of the ITA Northeast Regional Championships, after a stellar weekend of play at Yale.
Jack Lin and William Matheson won five matches, while Victor Pham and Jackie Tang posted four victories as the two teams will battle it out at Columbia's Dick Savitt Tennis Center on Tuesday at 3 p.m. to see who advances to the Fall National Championships.
A season ago, Richard Pham and Victor Pham bested Shawn Hadavi and Tang, 6-1, 6-3, as the Pham brothers made their way to the Fall National Championships at USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing, New York. This year, the Lin/Matheson pair faces the Pham/Tang team with the winners advancing to Indian Wells, California, for the Fall National Championships, which run Nov. 1-5.
Pham and Tang advanced to the quarterfinal round of the singles tournament, with results still unavailable for the semifinal and finals matches. Pham never gave up a set in five wins against Ivy League opponents, including a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Jean Thirouin to advance to the final against David Volfson from Cornell. In the match with Volfson, Pham came away with a 6-3, 6-3 victory to earn the singles crown at the Northeast Regional, and qualify for the ITA Fall National Championship. For Tang, three singles victories helped the sophomore have a nice run before eventually falling in the quarterfinals to Harvard's Andy Zhou in three sets.
