Women's Tennis Drops 5-2 Decision at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y.—The Columbia women's tennis team dropped a closely contested 5-2 decision at Syracuse Sunday afternoon at the Drumlins Country Club. With the loss, Columbia drops to 2-1 overall in dual matches, while Syracuse improves to 3-0.

 

Syracuse used a pair of two-set singles victories and captured the doubles point to take the win. The Orange won two 6-3 doubles matches at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take a 1-0 lead. The Orange captured decisions at No. 1 and No. 2 before Columbia junior captain Andrea Kevakian claimed a win at No. 5 singles. Syracuse's Dina Hegab followed with the Orange's match-clinching win at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 win over Columbia senior Adi Milstein.

 

Kevakian and junior Sarah Hu tallied Columbia's two victories on the day. Kevakian defeated Syracuse's Libi Mesh 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 5 singles, while Hu registered a hard-fought win at No. 3 singles when Syracuse's Anna Shkudun retired after closely contested 6-7 (4) 5-5 match. Kevakian improved to a perfect 3-0 on the young season in dual matches and 13-2 overall.

 

Columbia (2-1) is back in action on Friday, Feb. 2 when it travels to Penn State for a 4 p.m. match in State College, Pa.
