The Bulldogs tied the game in the 39th minute and went on for the win after keeping the Lions scoreless in the shootout.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Columbia field hockey team fell to Yale, 2-1, in a shootout on a cold, rainy day in New Haven. The Lions (7-8, 2-4) led 1-0 at the half, but the Bulldogs (9-7, 3-3) scored in the 39th minute and took the match, 2-0, during the strokes.
The first half was largely controlled by Yale, who held an 11-1 edge on shots on goal. However, Columbia jumped in front when Jaimie McCormick's shot from the right wing snuck under the foot of the Bulldogs' goalkeeper in the 23rd minute.
Yale evened things up off of Bridget Condie's sixth of the year, which came off a corner. From there, the Lions defense stepped up to limit Yale's chances and keep the game knotted and force the extra sessions.
After a fairly even first overtime, the Lions were all over the Bulldogs in the final 10 minutes. Columbia peppered Sydney Terroso with six shots and forced her to make five saves to push the game into the shootout. In the skills competition, Yale's first two shooters converted, while all three Lions players were denied.
In net, Katie Dempsey stopped 16 shots on the day.
Columbia will host Sacred Heart, Sunday, October 28 to wrap up its home slate. Prior to the contest, the Lions will honor Danielle Buttinger, Katherine Cavanaugh, Dempsey, Katie Koester and Keegan Marsh on Senior Day. Game time is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
