Columbia moves into a third place tie with Princeton in the Ivy standings
NEW YORK — Columbia field hockey defeated Dartmouth, 3-1, on Alumni Day on Sunday afternoon at the Columbia Field Hockey Complex.
The Lions (5-3, 2-1) picked up their second straight victory behind goals from Izzy Kaczor, Norah Veldhuizen, and Kate Kim.
Kaczor opened the scoring at 2:13 into the second quarter, converting a feed from Mckenzie Bloom to give Columbia a 1-0 lead. With 10:56 to go until the break, Dartmouth (3-6, 1-2) earned a penalty stroke. Margot Houle dove left and stopped the shot, holding the Lions' advantage into the half.
Columbia added two goals in the third quarter to build a three-goal cushion. Veldhuizen's first career goal doubled the lead with 7:32 to play in the frame off a pass from Delfina Gonzalez Lobo that was deflected into the cage. Kate Kim scored just 2:30 later, tipping in a Lizzie Adams shot to make it 3-0.
Dartmouth got on the board with a goal from Ella Bowman with 1:47 left in the third, but the Columbia defense held the Big Green scoreless over the final 17 minutes.
Houle made four saves in the victory, including two in the fourth quarter. The Lions and Dartmouth each finished with nine shots, but Columbia put six shots on goal to the Big Green's five.
Columbia returns to action on Friday when the Lions travel to Yale at 5 p.m.
