After taking home the Northeast Regional title last weekend in Buffalo, Lions look ahead to NCAA Championships.
MADISON, Wis.- The Columbia Women's Cross Country team is off to Madison, Wisconsin for this year's NCAA Cross Country National Championship. The women took home the Northeast Regional title last weekend in Buffalo, which automatically advanced the Lions onto the national stage. At regionals, the Lions placed five runners in the top-13 finishers, which sent the squad to the top of the leaderboard. This is the second year in a row that the Lions' women's squad has qualified for the NCAA Championships and first back-to-back appearances since 2004 and 2005.
The Lions have had a strong showing this season, grabbing the NCAA Regional title and the Ivy League Heptagonal Championship trophy. In addition, the squad has also held a national ranking for the past four weeks following an exceptional performance at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational. Columbia Director of Cross Country Dan Ireland has also been named Ivy League and Northeast Region Coach of the Year.
The 6k race begins Saturday at 11:45 p.m. ET/10:45 a.m. CT, and will take place at the Zimmer Championship Course at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Lions enter the competition with a No. 19 national ranking, up one spot from last week's USTFCCCA coaches poll. Fellow Ivy league schools Princeton and Dartmouth, are also ranked nationally and will compete this weekend in Madison.
