Penn Pulls Away in 2nd Half to Defeat Women's Basketball

NEW YORK — Penn outscored the Columbia women's basketball team 47-15 in the second half to defeat the Lions, 75-39, Friday night in Ivy League action at Levien Gymnasium.

Columbia (7-17, 1-8 Ivy) played a competitive first half to trail by just four. Junior Abby Lee and sophomore Janiya Clemmons each had seven points and the Lions were holding the two-time defending Ivy League champions to just 35-percent from the floor. After Penn took a 25-16 lead, Columbia scored nine of the final 11 points, including a jumper by Zimmerman in the final seconds, to enter the break down 28-24.

Penn (16-6, 7-2 Ivy) scored the first 11 points of the second half and outscored Columbia 25-9 in the third quarter to pull away. Freshman Eleah Parker started the half with a layup, followed by a 3-point play by senior Anna Ross, another bucket by senior Michelle Nwokedi and a 3-pointer by junior Ashley Russell. Russell finished the night with a game-high 14 points, while Ross added 12 and Nwokedi scored nine to go with a team-high 10 rebounds.

Senior Camille Zimmerman led the Lions with 12 points and 10 rebounds for her Ivy League-leading 13th double-double of the season. Lee, Clemmons and sophomore Maya Sampleton scored seven points apiece while rookie Riley Casey recorded a game-high four assists.

Columbia struggled to season-lows in points (39) and field goal percentage (.246). Penn quieted the Lions to 16.7 percent in the second half, while the Quakers hit over 55 percent of their shots and went 6-for-11 (.545) from long range.

Columbia (6-18, 1-8 Ivy League) played the third of four straight home games and is back in action Saturday afternoon when it hosts league-leading Princeton at 4 p.m. The game will air live on the Ivy League Network with a tape delay set for SportsNet NY (SNY).
