Women's Basketball Puts Up 90, Outpaces Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Senior Camille Zimmerman went for 23 points and 16 rebounds to head a group of five double-figure scorers and lead the Columbia women's basketball team to a much-needed victory over Brown, 90-74, Friday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

Columbia (8-18, 9-2 Ivy) beat Brown (14-10, 2-9 Ivy) at its own game, shooting 50 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range (11-22) to outpace the Bears, who came into the night averaging an Ivy League-best 77.1 points per game. The Lions reached the 90-point plateau for the second time this season, scoring at least 20 in each quarter to avenge an 84-80 loss from two weeks ago in New York.

"Brown makes you play fast and tonight I was proud of our girls for being able to push pace and be in control," stated head coach Megan Griffith in her postgame interview. "Brown is a team that likes to go. They have a lot of playmakers and we came out looking to match their pace but still run our stuff. Finding that balance was important."

Zimmerman nearly pulled off a second straight 20-20 performance against the Bears. After Brown had cut the lead to seven in the fourth quarter, the Katrina McClain Award finalist sparked the Lions with six of the next nine points. She scored off her own miss to end the run and dished out one of her six assists to fellow senior Paige Tippet, who knocked down a corner three to push the lead back to double figures. Zimmernan hit one of her own from deep to make it a 13-point game with 3:00 to go.

"The mortality of being a senior is here for her," Griffith added on Zimmerman, who had 22 points and 24 rebounds the last time the two teams met. "I love coaching that kid. I'm thrilled for her. She's pretty special."

First-year Imani Whittington provided all of the first-half momentum, scoring 10 first-quarter points on her way to a career-high 17. The London native was 6-for-13 from the field and also had a career night on the glass with six boards. Tippet (13), sophomore Janiya Clemmons (12) and first-year Madison Pack (12) rounded out the double-figure scorers. Pack's dozen came on 4-of-6 from 3-point range, adding seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Shayna Metta scored 22 for Brown but shot just 7-of-20 from the field. Justine Gaziano was more efficient with 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting, but the Bears could not keep pace with Columbia. The home team hit 7 of their 21 threes and were outrebounded by 11. None of Brown's players had more than five boards.

Columbia scored eight straight points to overcome Brown's 4-0 start and take its first lead. The two sides went on to combine for nine lead changes in the first quarter. Whittington scored the final five points with a trey in the last minute to give the Lions a 22-20 advantage.

Brown never led again but hung close the remainder of the half. They tied it twice in the early minutes of the second quarter before Columbia used a 7-0 run to go up 31-24. The Bears got back within a point twice, but Columbia scored six of the final eight points heading into the half. Tippet sank a long jumper at the buzzer to bump the lead back to 45-39.

The lead grew to double figures for the first time as the Lions scored five straight to begin the second half. Brown used a quick timeout to settle things down, but a 9-0 Columbia run midway through the quarter ballooned the lead to 14.

Columbia maintained its double-digit lead until the fourth quarter, when Gaziano helped Brown go on a run to slice the deficit to seven. However, that was as close as it got before Columbia scored six straight to regain control and snap its six-game losing streak.

The Lions head to New Haven for their final road game of the season on Saturday against Yale. Tip from Lee Amphitheater is set for 5 p.m.
