The Lions' received goals from three different players to come away with a Labor Day victory over Monmouth.
NEW YORK – The Columbia field hockey team picked up its first win of the season, topping Monmouth 3-1 Monday night. The Lions (1-1) received goals from three different players and played strong defense in front of Katie Dempsey, who made four saves in net.
"Our aim going into this weekend was getting our entire team into our attack and back on defense," said head coach Caroline Nelson-Nichols. "At the end of the day, it takes all 22 of us to win a game and I saw that tonight. Going up two goals on a side like Monmouth (was key). They are fantastic in terms of their structure. They want to play fast and we were trying to be as prepared for that as we could."
Columbia came out assertive in the first half and its persistence paid off in the eighth minute with some strong possession down the left side of the scoring area. Near the end line, first-year Emma Domich made a centering touch pass to a wide-open Danielle Buttinger in front, who buried the chance for her second goal in as many games.
Kelsey Farkas doubled the margin in the 34th minute with her first career score. The sophomore took an angle to the left wing and rifled a reverse shot that hit the upper corner of the cage to make it 2-0 in favor of the Lions. However, moments later the Hawks (2-2) drew within one.
Monmouth forced a corner and maintained control in the offensive zone when Josephine van der Hoop sent in a hard pass to the right doorstep that Kelly Hanna tipped in for her third goal of the year.
Early in the second half, the Hawks applied pressure and maintained possession in Columbia's backfield, but could not generate any shots. The Lions took advantage, effectively putting the game away in the 48th minute on superb effort from Jennifer Trieschman.
Columbia made several quick passes to get up the field, leading to Trieschman carrying the ball down the right side. Once in the semicircle, the junior's first shot was deflected, but the ball wound up back on her stick. After inching closer to the net, Trieschman lofted home an insurance goal to make it 3-1.
From there, the Lions seized control only yielding two shots and one on target in the remaining 22 minutes of action.
The Lions will hit the road for the first time in 2018 this Friday, September 7, when they take on UMass-Lowell at 7 p.m.
