A pair of first-years netted their first collegiate goals and Danielle Buttinger added two assists, but the Lions were stunned with 2:43 left in overtime.
LOWELL, Mass. – UMass-Lowell's Torrie Huk capped a hat trick with a game-winning, double-overtime goal in the 87th minute to give the Riverhawks a 4-3 victory over the Columbia field hockey team Friday night. The Lions (1-2) held a pair of one goal leads, including one with just under four minutes to play, but could not hold on.
Danielle Buttinger continued to ignite the offense with a pair of assists. The senior forward now has points in all three games.
In the 67th minute, Huk made it 3-3 when she received a pass through traffic and one-timed one into the net. Both teams exchanged chances down the stretch, but two extra times were needed. Both teams traded high-quality opportunities and two golden tries were denied by Riverhawks goalie Eva Berkhout, including a kick save with 0.3 seconds left in the first OT and one off the helmet in the second.
But it was Huk again who buried a 2-on-1 chance for her sixth goal of the season to help her team come away with the win.
Early in the contest, the Riverhawks struck first, taking advantage of a broken play in the fourth minute. Anouck Lalande swept a centering pass to the middle of the scoring area. Huk was the player in front and collided with a charging Katie Dempsey and got just enough on the shot to get it past the goal line.
However, Columbia responded positively, controlled the time of possession and kept things in the offensive end. The Lions' hard work paid off in the 19th minute when Katie Koester knotted things up at 1-1. Buttinger took the ball off a corner and pushed it forward to Koester, who tapped it home for her second goal of the year. The tally matches the senior's goal total from a season ago.
The Lions generated another opportunity off a corner in the 27th minute to take the lead. Kelsey Farkas inserted to Brooke Gasser on the left wing, who's shot was initially blocked. Gasser followed her attempt and the rebound caromed off a defender's stick and over the Berkhout's blocker for the Virginia Beach native's first collegiate goal.
The second half started similarly to the first half, with UMass-Lowell getting on the board quickly. Off a turnover in the defensive zone, Grace Davis was left alone from close-range and ripped a hard shot into the bottom left corner for the equalizer in the 37th minute. The Riverhawks continued to pressure the Lions, but could not break through thanks to more solid work from Columbia's backfield and senior netminder.
With just over eight minutes remaining in regulation, the Lions cashed in on another penalty corner. Buttinger shuffled a pass to Emily Maclean to the top of the corner and her shot was deflected in from Grace Payne to put Columbia back in front, 3-2, before UMass-Lowell sent things into overtime.
The Lions will stay in Massachusetts to take on Holy Cross on Sunday, September 9 for a 12 p.m. contest.
