Field Hockey Edges Hofstra 3-2 on Late Penalty Stroke Goal

J. Solari Etcheberry netted the game-winner
NEW YORK — Jacinta Solari Etcheberry converted a penalty stroke with 3:01 remaining to lift Columbia past Hofstra, 3-2, at Alumni Day on Sunday at the Columbia Field Hockey Complex.
Columbia (5-4, 1-2) led 2-0 behind first-half goals from Sophia Abate and Delfina Gonzalez Lobo. Abate opened the scoring 6:15 into the first quarter, and Gonzalez Lobo doubled the advantage nearly midway through the second, finishing a feed from Nicole Campolattaro.
Hofstra (5-6, 0-2) pulled within one before halftime when Kelly Levengood scored in the 25th minute. The Pride drew level in the fourth period on Teresa Karoff's goal off a penalty corner, with assists from Kesia Richardson and Gwenn van Dijk.
The Lions earned the decisive stroke late in the fourth after sustained pressure. Jacinta Solari Etcheberry, who had three shots, buried the attempt for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Goalkeeper Margot Houle finished with four saves for Columbia. Luci Hollister made two stops for Hofstra.
The Lions host Yale on Friday at 3 p.m. for Breast Cancer Awareness Day.
