Track and Field Enjoys Successful Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge
1/26/2019 6:51:00 PM | Track and Field
Lions win two titles, enjoy 10 top-5 finishes; men's team finishes in fourth place, women ninth in team competition against the likes of Ohio State, BYU, Duke, South Carolina, Virginia, Villanova, UCLA.
NEW YORK—With 10 top-5 finishes overall, the Columbia Track and Field program completed a successful weekend at its annual Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge on Saturday afternoon at the Armory in New York City. On the weekend's highly competitive event featuring 25 schools, the Lions won two events, placed second in two events, finished third in three events, fourth in one event and garnered two fifth place finishes.
In the team competition, Columbia finished tied for fourth place overall with 56 points. BYU captured the men's title with 89 points, followed by Ohio State (81), UCLA (79) and Columbia and Virginia (56 each). On the women's side, Columbia finished in ninth place with 29 points. Ohio State claimed the women's title with 74 points followed by Duke (67.5).
"Our men's senior class had a really good weekend," Columbia Head Track and Field Coach Dan Ireland said. "We have a talented senior class led by Josiah Langstaff, Alek Sauer, Sam Ritz and Brian Zabilski. Those four are our big hitters. They all ran very well today. After anchoring the DMR last night, Ritz won the One Mile Run in 4:01.94, Zabilski moved to No. 2 on our all-time list in the 3k and missed the school record by a second, Sauer moved to No. 2 in 1,000-meter run and Langstaff did the job in the 800-meters. Three of those guys ran on our DMR."
"It was fun to watch us compete against big-time schools. For the most part, we didn't get intimidated. A couple of times we looked at uniforms instead of just racing but overall I was very pleased with our performance this weekend. Even just the meet itself went over very, very well. Obviously, the pro stuff, to have a world record and some world-bests, it was a great experience for our team."
On Friday, Columbia defended New York City as it claimed the men's distance medley relay title in running a 9:38.93. Senior Alek Sauer, first-year Malik Johnson, senior Josiah Langstaff and senior Sam Ritz combined to register the 9:38.93, which ranks as the best time in the world, NCAA and Ivy League in 2019. In addition, the time ranks third all-time among Columbia indoor DMR records. The Lions finished ahead of Duke (9:41.89), Oklahoma (9:42.44) and UCLA (9:44.61).
Ritz was Columbia's other champion as he raced to victory in the One Mile Run in 4:01.94.
Taking second place finishes were Josiah Langstaff in the men's 800-meters (1:51.35) and Brian Zabilski in the men's 3,000-meter run (8:02.15). Third place performances included Columbia's women's distance medley relay team of junior Katie Wasserman, first-year Jackie Patterson, senior Jillian Murray, senior Erin Gregoire, which ran an 11:24.74, sophomore Jackson Storey in the men's 800-meter run (1:51.59) and junior Kate Wasserman in the women's One Mile Run (4:44.23), sophomore Allie Hays placed fourth in the women's 3,000-meter run (9:33.75), first-year Kali Hatcher took fifth in the women's long jump (5.62m) and junior Daniel Igbokwe placed fifth in the men's triple jump (15.25m).
That was only the beginning of Columbia's successful day. Sophomore Lauren Micham placed sixth overall in the women's 60-meter hurdles as she ran an 8.50 finals time. Her preliminary time of 8.49 ranks as the best current time in the Ivy League, the second-best time in school history and a personal best.
Competing against a strong field in the invitational run, Alek Sauer finished sixth in the 1,000-meters in 2:22.14, sophomore Owen Bishop ran a 4:09.75 to place sixth in the men's One Mile Run and Hatcher followed up her long jump performance with a sixth place finish in the women's triple jump (12.27m). senior Robert O'Brien placed sixth in the men's pole vault at 4.95m and sophomore Jack Pihlkar finished sixth in the men's weight throw (17.59m).
