ITA All-American Run Ends for Bhan

Sophomore Akanksha Bhan became the first player in Columbia women’s tennis history to advance to the ITA All-American Main Singles Draw.
TULSA, Okla.—For the first time in Columbia women's tennis history, a Lions player advanced to the main singles draw at the ITA All-American event as sophomore Akanksha Bhan won five consecutive matches and six of her eight overall singles matches through the Pre-Qualifier and Qualifier brackets to advance to the Main Draw this week in Tulsa, Okla.
For the tournament, Bhan defeated three nationally ranked opponents. Her run ended Friday in the consolation bracket when she defeated No. 44 ranked Zoe Spence of Notre Dame 7-6 (6), 6-3 but lost to No. 29 Zeleva Valeriya of UCF 6-3, 6-4. She defeated two nationally ranked opponents before dropping a 7-5, 6-2 decision to Florida Atlantic's Martina Kudelova, the nation's No. 51 ranked singles player, on Thursday. She advanced to the Main Draw second round with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over No. 53 ranked Martina Zerulo of Arkansas, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
A 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Baylor's Jessica Hinojosa, the nation's No. 100 ranked player, vaulted her into the Main Draw Singles bracket.
Her run began last weekend in the Pre-Qualifiers Tournament as Bhan won three matches to advance to the Qualifiers Tournament. Bhan defeated Texas A&M's Riley McQuaid 6-4, 6-2, then defeated South Carolina's Chinellato Silvia 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday. On Sunday, she advanced to the Qualifiers Tournament with a 6-4, 7-6 (8) win over Kansas' Naounaou Malkia.
