Bhan Advances in ITA All-American, Three Lions Win Titles at Northwestern

Akanksha Bhan wins three singles matches at ITA All-American to advance to Qualifier bracket; three Lions win flights at Northwestern Invitational: Melissa Sakar, Shivani Amineni and Michelle Xu.
TULSA, Okla., EVANSTON, Ill.—Sophomore Akanksha Bhan won three consecutive singles matches to advance to the Qualifier Tournament at the ITA All-American this weekend in Tulsa, Okla. In addition, three Columbia players—sophomore Melissa Sakar and first-years Shivani Amineni and Michelle Xu won their respective tournaments at the Northwestern Wildcat Invitational this weekend in Evanston, Ill.
Bhan defeated Texas A&M's Riley McQuaid 6-4, 6-2, then defeated South Carolina's Chinellato Silvia 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday. On Sunday, she advanced to the Qualifiers Tournament with a 6-4, 7-6 (8) win over Kansas' Naounaou Malkia. Both Kerr and Wan dropped their first round matches. A total of four Columbia women's tennis players—sophomore Akanksha Bhan, junior Paulina Ferrari, junior Jennifer Kerr, and junior Christie Wan—were selected to compete at the prestigious ITA All-American this week. Bhan, Kerr and Wan competed in the Pre-Qualifying Singles bracket on Saturday and Sunday, while Bhan and Ferrari, and Wan and Kerr will begin Qualifying Doubles play on Monday. Kerr enters preseason as the No. 116 ranked player in singles.
A total of eight Lions traveled to Evanston, Ill. to play in the Northwestern Wildcat Invitational and Sakar, Amineni and Xu didn't disappoint as they each claimed flight titles. Xu and Amineni won the Flight C and Flight D brackets respectively with two wins apiece. Sakar needed to win three straight matches to win the Flight B singles title. She claimed the title in dramatic, come-from-behind fashion as she defeated Northwestern's Christina Hand 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
