Wall's Golden Goal Seals 2-1 Victory at Bucknell

Junior midfielder Gracie Wall net the game-winner in the 100th minute to lift Columbia past Bucknell in its non-conference finale

LEWISBURG, Pa. — First-year forward Shira Cohen scored a late equalizer and junior midfielder Gracie Wall net the golden goal in the 100th minute to lift the Columbia women's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime win over Bucknell on Tuesday night in the non-conference finale at Emmitt Field.

Columbia rises to 7-3-1 on the season with the victory, while the Bison drop to 4-9 overall.

"What an exciting game! So proud of the response after being down a goal at halftime," said Columbia head coach Tracey Bartholomew. "Credit to Bucknell for coming out well, but we knew we didn't play our best and we had more in us. We never gave up, kept grinding and Shira created a great moment and finish under pressure."

Bucknell opened up the scoring early, putting the ball past first-year Columbia keeper Liz Matei in the 21st minute to give the Bison a 1-0 lead that would carry through halftime.

After outshooting the Bison 8-4 in the opening period, the Lions continued to play aggressive coming out of the locker room, putting up the first three shots of the second half. It wasn't until the 82nd minute Columbia would break through as Cohen slipped past a Bucknell defender and broke free, drawing Bucknell's keeper out into the box. Cohen chipped a right-footed shot over the keeper from 15 yards out for her second goal of the season.

Columbia had a chance to put the game away in the final minute of regulation as junior forward Jordyn Geller drew a foul right in front of the box. Senior midfielder Maddie Temares would take the free kick, but her shot went wide right to send the game into extra minutes.

The Lions came out strong in overtime, not allowing a single Bucknell shot. With just under three seconds remaining in the period, Temares was fouled in the box to earn a penalty kick. Bison keeper Raegan Dunwoody would make a diving save to the right, but Wall would swoop in for the rebound and record the game-winner across the goal area off the far post.

"Rylee Hanna took that throw in with under 14 seconds to go and somehow Jordyn Geller got it to Ally Clark who hit an unbelievable cross in to Maddie T. who got fouled in the box," explained Bartholomew. "Tough call for any official to make with 2.9 seconds on the clock, but glad she did the right thing. Their goalkeeper made a great save, but we crashed hard and Gracie used her speed to get the winner. What a team effort."

Junior goalkeeper Juliet Allen replaced Matei between the sticks after the halftime break, making two second-half stops and recording the win.

In total, Columbia outshot the Bison, 20-9, including an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal.

The Lions return home to continue Ivy League action Saturday, Oct. 12, facing off against Penn. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. ET at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.
