The Men's and Women's Squash Captains have been announced
NEW YORK – The 2019-20 Men's and Women's Squash Captains have been announced this past week. The No. 6 ranked team selects James Wyatt and Zain Athar to represent the men. For the women, Jui Kalgutkar and Nicole Kendall to represent.
About The Captains:
James Wyatt is currently a sophomore at Columbia College. In the 2018-19 season, he made the First Team All-Ivy League and was Second Team All-American. On top of that, he concluded the season with a 9-4 record.
"We have a young talented team this year so it will be exciting to see what we can do" said Wyatt.
Zain Athar is a current junior at Columbia College. He was a member of the 2018 Ivy League Championship team. Primarily competed in No. 10-12 positions.
"We have an extremely hardworking and deep team this year, with the majority in their freshmen and sophomore years. We're looking to come out of every match as the tougher team on court. Being captain means putting the team first every day, and I couldn't be more excited to do so alongside my competitive, humble, and driven teammates. Our goal is to bring another title back home this season" said Athar.
Jui Kalgutkar is originally from Mumbai and is currently a senior at Columbia College. Apart from her 6-6 record in the 2018-19 season, Kalgutkar has constantly played in the top 4 on the team's line up throughout her time as a Columbia Lion.
"This is my fourth season here and I believe in this team and the work we have been putting in. I am super excited about the upcoming matches and am excited about how we achieve the goals we've set for the team this season" said Kalgutkar.
Nicole Kendall is a current junior at Columbia College. She played predominately at the number 2 position; went 2-1 at nationals with wins over Ellie Ruggiero from Princeton (3-2) and Jamila Tamer from Penn (3-2) and a close loss against Celine Yeap from Yale (3-1) for an ultimate 6th place finish, the best in team history.
"I feel that we have the most talented team we've ever had with all of the freshmen who have joined us this year. Last year we were the highest ranked team in Columbia history and I am really looking forward to making history once again. All the pieces to having a great team are already in place so I see my role as a captain as ensuring that we all keep our goals in mind for the upcoming season" said Kendall.
The Lions celebrate their first victories this weekend against Fordham and NYU. Both Men's and Women's teams concluded the matches undefeated. This weekend the Lions head to Philadelphia, Saturday Novemeber 23 to face Drexel at 2 p.m.
