Mike Roussos (unanimous selection) and Rory Schlageter earn First Team honors, Daniel DeLorenzi named to Second Team, Parker Coogan, Ben McKeighan, Ben Mathiasmeier, Scott Valentas and Alex Felkins are honorable mention picks.
PRINCETON, N.J.—Led by two First Team selections—sophomore return specialist Mike Roussos and senior tight end Rory Schlageter—eight Columbia football players earned All-Ivy League football honors, the conference office announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Earning Second Team honors for Columbia was senior defensive lineman Daniel DeLorenzi. Columbia's five honorable mention picks include senior offensive lineman Parker Coogan, first-year linebacker Scott Valentas, junior defensive back Ben Mathiasmeier, senior defensive back Benjamin McKeighan, and first-year placekicker Alex Felkins.
The All-Ivy League Team and yearly football awards are picked and voted upon by the conference's eight head football coaches. The entire team is posted below.
Return specialist/wide receiver Mike Roussos was one of five conference players to earn unanimous First Team All-Ivy League honors. Roussos earns the prestigious honor for the second consecutive year and becomes the first Lion to earn back-to-back All-Ivy League First Team honors since offensive lineman Jeff Adams earned three straight honors from 2009-11.
Roussos led the Ivy League in four statistical categories including kickoff return average (23.8), punt return average (17.3), punt return touchdowns (1), and combined kick return yardage (907), and ranked No. 3 in all-purpose yardage per game (130.8). He also ranked among national FCS leaders in punt return touchdowns (No. 2), punt return average (No. 3), combined return yardage (No. 4), and all-purpose yards per game (No. 18). He also earned the Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week honor three times this season and four times in his career. On the year, Roussos led the Lions with six touchdowns (team-high four rushing TDs), 1,308 all-purpose yards (665 kickoff returns, 242 punt returns, 395 receiving and six rushing), ranked second on the squad in both receptions (35) and receiving yards (395) and totaled six games of 100 or more all-purpose yards. A preseason Third Team All-American selection, Roussos set or tied school records for most combined return yards in a season (907), most career 50-yard returns (6), and most career return touchdowns (3). Over his two-year, 18-game career, the New Port Richey, Fla. native has accumulated 1,741 all-purpose yards (96.7 per game), scored eight touchdowns, caught 38 passes for 407 yards and accumulated 868 kickoff return (24.1 average) and 460 punt return (17.7 average) yards. He is enrolled at Columbia College.
A native of Maplewood, N.J., Schlageter was the only tight end named to the All-Ivy League First Team. He becomes the first Columbia tight end to earn First Team All-Ivy League honors since Andrew Kennedy in 2010. Schlageter ranked No. 3 on the squad in both receptions (24) and receiving yards (239), scored one touchdown, and ranked No. 4 in all-purpose yardage. Schlageter, who caught at least one pass in nine of Columbia's 10 games in 2019, set career-highs for both receptions (7) and receiving yards (52) in the Lions' season finale at Cornell. A 31-game starter, who has seen action in 37 career contests at Columbia, Schlageter has caught 38 passes for 328 yards (8.9 average per catch) and three touchdowns. Enrolled at Columbia College, Schlageter is a Political Science major.
DeLorenzi earns All-Ivy League honors for the second consecutive season as he was a First Team selection last year. This year, DeLorenzi ranked No. 4 in the league in sacks (5.5), No. 15 in tackles for loss (7.5) and finished with 26 tackles (12 solo), a fumble recovery and a forced fumble. Earlier this year against Central Connecticut State, he set Columbia's career sacks and most sacks from yardage records. DeLorenzi, who has led the Lions in sacks in each of the last four seasons, concludes his career with 22.0 sacks, 27.0 tackles for loss and 95 tackles (48 solo) in 37 games played. He goes down as Columbia's all-time greatest pass-rusher as he is the school's record-holder for career sacks (22.0), most season sacks (10.0 in 2018), and most career yards from sacks (132). He also ranks No. 2 in most career yards from tackles for loss (154). The Cedar Grove, N.J. native is a Psychology major.
Coogan earns All-Ivy League honorable mention honors for the second straight season as Columbia's center. A two-time CoSIDa Academic All-District selection, Coogan concludes his career after having started 30 consecutive games at two different positions on the offensive line (10 at right guard in 2017 and 20 at center from 2018-19). He was named a preseason Second Team All-Ivy League honoree by Phil Steele Magazine. A four-year letterman from Kingwood, Texas, Coogan is an Economics major.
A Katy, Texas native, Mathiasmeier ranked among Ivy League leaders in tackles (No. 4) and interceptions (No. 9). He led the Lions in tackles (67) and interceptions (two) from his strong safety position. His most memorable play came in overtime against Harvard when he ended the game with a walk-off interception. He registered 10 or more tackles in two games and made three or more tackles in all 10 contests during the 2019 season. Over his three-year, 30-game career, Mathiasmeier has made 97 tackles (58 solo), intercepted three passes, broke up four passes, recovered two fumbles, and registered 3.5 tackles for loss. Mathiasmeier is an Economics major.
Columbia's career record-holder for pass breakups with 24 from 2016-19, McKeighan earns All-Ivy League honorable mention honors for the first time in his career. As Columbia's top cover-corner, McKeighan led the Lions and ranked No. 9 in the Ivy League in pass breakups with eight, ranked No. 7 on the squad in tackles with 30 (20 solo) and also recovered a fumble. In his 28-game, 23-start career, McKeighan has totaled 93 tackles, 24 pass breakups, three interceptions, 27 passes defended, one fumble recovery and two tackles for loss. A Scottsdale, Ariz. native, McKeighan is an Economics major.
A Wichita, Kansas native, Valentas emerged as one of Columbia's top linebackers as he earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors two times during 2019. He led Columbia and set a school-record for most tackles for loss in a season for a first-year with 8.5, ranked second on the squad with 60 tackles (30 solo), intercepted a pass, recovered a fumble and forced a fumble in just six starts and 10 games played at linebacker. He ranked No. 10 in the Ivy League in tackles per game (6.0) and ranked No. 11 in tackles for loss (0.85 per game). Valentas registered two 10-plus tackle games and led the Lions in tackles twice. He was also named a two-time national STATS FCS honorable mention pick for its weekly Rookie of the Week award. Valentas is enrolled at Columbia College.
As a first-year placekicker, Felkins impressed with his range and accuracy in his first year of collegiate competition. After only three games at Columbia, Felkins became the first kicker in school history to convert two 50-yard field goals and is just the fifth kicker in Ivy League history (since 1956) to convert two 50-yard field goals in a career. His 51-yarder at Princeton and 50-yarder at Saint Francis, Pa. were also the two longest field goals in the Ivy League this year. For the season, Felkins led the Lions in scoring with 49 points, and converted 9-14 field goals and 22-24 point after attempts. He also registered 24 touchbacks in 41 kickoffs as the Lions' kickoff specialist. Among league statistical leaders, Felkins ranked No. 6 in kick scoring (4.9 ppg.), No. 2 in field goals (nine) and No. 7 in PAT kicking percentage (91.7). A high school All-American from Tulsa, Okla. who earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors on Sept. 23 and Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week honors on Oct. 21, Felkins twice was an honorable mention pick for the STATS FCS weekly Special Teams/Rookie of the Week award. He is enrolled at Columbia College.
