11/29/2019 3:32:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Lions go for third straight win to close out November
NEW YORK – Columbia (3-3) returns home for the first time in nearly three weeks on Saturday to play host to Milwaukee (2-4). Tip from Levien Gymnasium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Saturday's women's basketball game is the front end of a Columbia basketball doubleheader at Levien Gym. The men's basketball team will follow with a game against Lehigh at 4 p.m.
OPENING TIPS
• First year guard Abbey Hsu is averaging a team-high 14.3 points and ranks No. 9 in the Ivy League in scoring. Hsu is shooting 47.8 percent from the field and an impressive 45.8 percent (11-24) from long range. Durr is the team's leading rebounder (6.5) and second-leading scorer (11.8).
• Janiya Clemmons, Sienna Durr, Hannah Pratt, Abbey Hsu and Kaitlyn Davis all rank inside the Ivy League's top 25 in both scoring and rebounding. Columbia is the only team to have five players in the league's top 25 in either category.
• Columbia enters with a 3-0 record when holding opponents to fewer than 70 points, compared to 0-3 when opponents score more than 70. The Lions are also 3-0 when playing on the weekend and 3-0 when playing a day game. All three of Columbia's wins have also come when holding its opponent under 40 percent shooting.
• Columbia's starting five has not changed over the first six games. Four of Columbia's five starters are underclassmen. First year Abbey Hsu and sophomore Hannah Pratt (injury) had not started a collegiate game prior to this season. Senior captain Janiya Clemmons is the lone upperclassman in the starting five.
• Saturday will mark the third series matchup between Columbia and Milwaukee. The Panthers won the first in 2004 at the Seattle Times Husky Tournament, 63-59, and were victorious last year in Wisconsin, 78-65.
QUICK NOTES
• Columbia leads the Ivy League in offensive rebounds per game (15.8) and is No. 2 in rebounds (43.3/game)
• Abbey Hsu ranks No. 8 in the Ivy League in field goal percentage (.478)
• Hsu's 45.8-percent mark from 3-point range would lead the league if she had one more make on the season. The minimum to qualify is 2.0 makes per game.
• Durr, Clemmons, Davis, Pratt and Hsu rank inside the Ivy League's top 20 in rebounding.
• Hannah Pratt and Kaitlyn Davis each rank among the league's top 10 in blocks.
• Janiya Clemmons and Abbey Hsu each rank sixth in the Ivy League in steals (1.5/game).
• Columbia has shot better than its opponent in five of its first six games.
• The Lions last won three straight Nov. 29-Dec. 6, 2017 over Boston College, UMBC and Saint Francis (PA).
GETTING BIG
• Columbia has significantly improved in rebounding and blocked shots compared to this point last season. Through six games, the Lions rank among the NCAA's top 80 in blocks (4.2), 72nd in rebounds (43.33) and 61st in rebound margin (+6.8). Through six games last season, the Lions ranked 220th in rebounds (36.83), 292nd in rebound margin (-6.0) and 315th in blocked shots (1.5).
STRONG FINAL 7:00
• In its last two victories, Columbia has outscored its opponent a combined 37-12 over the final seven minutes of the game. Against Robert Morris, the Lions trailed 53-46 with 7:00 to go before using a 15-6 finish to pull out a 61-59 victory. Last Saturday at Army, the Lions trailed 57-49 with 7:00 remaining and outscored the Black Knights 22-6 to polish off a second straight road win. In the win against Army, Columbia shot 6-of-9 from the field and hit 10-of-13 at the free throw line over the final 7:00.
TOURNAMENT TESTED
• Three of Columbia's first five opponents qualified for last year's NCAA Tournament as winners of their respective conferences. The Lions posted a record of 2-1 in those contests, which began by soundly defeating Atlantic 10 champion Fordham, 70-51, at home. The Lions then went on the road to take on last year's MAC champion, Buffalo, and NEC champion, Robert Morris. Columbia led the majority of the game and put up a strong fight against Buffalo before the Bulls pulled away in the fourth quarter, 82-75. However, two days later, the Lions took out Robert Morris down in Moon Township, Pennsylvania, 61-59, rallying back from seven points down in the fourth quarter and surviving a potential game-winning three at the buzzer.
• The Lions aren't finished with defending conference champions. Following the New Year, they will welcome two-time defending Southern Conference champion Mercer to Levien Gymnasium for a rematch. Last season, Columbia handed the Bears a 72-68 loss in Macon, Georgia, which wound up being Mercer's loss before going on to capture the Southern Conference regular season and tournament championships in undefeated fashion.
DURR'S CAREER DAY
• Sienna Durr posted career-highs in scoring (31), rebounding (13), field goals (11-21) and 3-pointers (5-10) at Buffalo (Nov. 15). Her 31 points tie for the 11th-most in a game in program history and is the most in a game by an Ivy League player this season. She also recorded the first 30-10 game by a Lion since Camille Zimmerman went for 31 and 11 at Harvard on Feb. 2, 2018.
SCOUTING MILWAUKEE
• The Panthers are 2-4 over their first six games but have lost all of their games against power conference opponents. Milwaukee played three straight Big Ten road games in a matter of one week at Purdue, Minnesota and Wisconsin. In their last outing, the Panthers fell behind by 32 at halftime and dropped a 94-65 decision at 16th-ranked DePaul. Brandi Bisping and Sydney Staver are UWM's leading scorers to this point, averaging 8.7 points per game apiece. Lizzie Odegard heads the effort on the glass at 6.3 per contest.
