Lions make quick turnaround for first Levien Gymnasium appearance
NEW YORK – The Columbia women's basketball team will play at Levien Gymnasium for the first time this season on Thursday, hosting Saint Joseph's for a 7 p.m. tip. The Lions (0-1) opened the season Tuesday with an overtime defeat at Albany. Thursday will mark Saint Joe's season opener.
OPENING TIPS
• Columbia enters the game with a 15-18 record all-time in home debuts. Last season, the Lions handily defeated Army to open the home slate, 70-49, led by Sienna Durr who went for 21 points and 10 rebounds.
• Columbia is coming off an 82-78 overtime loss at Albany in Tuesday's season opener. First-year Kaitlyn Davis scored a team-high 23 points and collected a game-high 13 rebounds in her Lions debut. Sophomore Hannah Pratt, who sat out last year injured, also recorded a double-double in her first game with 10 points and 11 rebounds, including the shot to force overtime with 7.9 seconds left in regulation.
• Kaitlyn Davis made program history on Tuesday, becoming the first Lion to go for 20 points and 10 rebounds in her debut.
• Davis and Hannah Pratt are the first Lions to record a double-double in their collegiate debuts since Chelsea Frazier has 12 points and 12 rebounds in a 75-69 win over Loyola Maryland in 2006. Tuesday marked the first time two Lions had double-doubles in their debuts.
• Last season, the Lions played Saint Joseph's to overtime in Philadelphia, making up an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit to force the extra period. The Lions started four rookies in that game.
HISTORIC DEBUT
• The Lions saw five players make their Columbia debuts on Tuesday, which included first-years Kaitlyn Davis, Abbey Hsu and Carly Rivera, sophomore Hannah Pratt and junior transfer Kallin Spiller.
• Davis shot 10-for-15 from the floor on her way to 23 points and 13 rebounds, becoming the first Lion in program history to post a 20-10 game in her debut. She is also only the third Lion in program history to go for 20 points and 10 rebounds in a season opener, joining Camille Zimmerman (2016) and Michele Gage (2005).
• Davis' 13 rebounds are the most by a Lion in a debut since Judie Lomax had 14 against Oakland in 2008. Lomax transferred to Columbia after playing the 2006-07 season at Oregon State.
• Davis' 23 points are the most by a Lion in a debut since Carolyn Binder scored 28 at LIU Brooklyn in 2013.
• Davis is the first Lion to score 20 points off the bench since Devon Roeper in December of 2015.
• Davis and Hannah Pratt are the first pair of Lions to post double-doubles in the same debut. Chelsea Frazier was the last to do it on her own in 2006. Davis and Pratt are also the first Lions to each post a double-double in the same game since Camille Zimmerman and Devon Roeper did so in a 4OT win against Dartmouth in 2017.
PRESEASON QUICK HITS
• Columbia returns all five of its starters and 11 of its 15 players overall from a year ago. The Lions return 91 percent of their scoring, 88 percent of their rebounding, 95 percent of their assists, 86 percent of their steals, 93 percent of their blocked shots and 88 percent of their minutes.
• Last season, Columbia's first-year class provided 51 percent of the team's scoring, 53 percent of its rebounds and 57 percent of its assists.
• Last year's team ranked No. 1 in Columbia history in 3-pointers made (198) and attempted (647), as well as 10th in points scored (1,752) and free throw percentage (.695).
• Columbia's 13 made triples against Houston (Nov. 21) and Hampton (Jan. 2) last season tie for the second-most in program history.
• Sienna Durr ranked No. 2 among all NCAA freshmen in field goal percentage last season (.487) as well as top 10 in scoring (14.5). Meanwhile Mikayla Markham ranked No. 2 among freshmen in assists per game (4.6).
• Senior Janiya Clemmons and junior Riley Casey were voted team captains during the preseason. Clemmons was the lone captain on last year's team. This is Casey's first time being voted team captain.
ALL-IVY RETURNERS
• Columbia's lineup features two All-Ivy League returners, which includes 2018-19 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-Ivy League selection Sienna Durr, as well as All-Ivy Honorable Mention Janiya Clemmons. Durr was the first Lion in program history to be named Ivy League Rookie of the Year and also the first Lion to be named All-Met Women's Div. I Rookie of the Year by the Met Basketball Writers Association. Columbia and Princeton are the only two teams in the Ivy League which return multiple All-Ivy honorees.
SCOUTING SAINT JOE'S
• Saint Joe's is coming off a 12-19, 7-9 Atlantic 10 campaign in 2018-19. The Hawks return eight letterwinners from a year ago, including two starters in sophomore guard Katie Jekot and sophomore forward Katie Mayock, and add six newcomers to the mix. Head coach Cindy Griffin, now in her 19th season on Hawk Hill, has a young squad this year as 10 of her 14 players are among either the freshman or sophomore classes.
