NEW YORK — The Columbia men's swimming and diving program will open the 2019-20 campaign this weekend, traveling to face Army on Friday at 5 p.m. ET, before hosting its home and Ivy League opener against Penn on Saturday at 1 p.m. The diving portion of Friday's meet at Army will begin at 4:15.
The Lions are looking to build on a fantastic 2018-19 campaign which saw the Lions post a 5-4 record in dual meets before going on to place fourth at the 2019 Ivy League Championships. It was the third consecutive year in which Columbia finished in the top half of the standings at the conference meet.
A slew of top contributors return this season, including a number of student-athletes who finished in the top eight at the Ivy League Championships a season ago. Those athletes include senior Nian-Guo Liu (6th, 200 IM; 3rd, 200 Free, 7th, 100 Free), sophomore Jonas Kistorp (4th, 50 Free; 2nd, 100 Fly), junior Albert Gwo (5th, 50 Free; 6th, 100 Fly, 8th, 100 Free), junior John Scanlon (5th, 1,000 Free), sophomore Joey Licht (8th, 400 IM; 6th, 200 Back), and sophomore David Wang (7th, 200 Breast)
Columbia will be without the services of All-American diver Jonathan Suckow this season, as he is taking a year off school to train for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in his native Switzerland.
SCOUTING ARMY
The Black Knights already have two meets under their belt, sitting at 1-0-1 after defeating UMass and registering a 150-150 tie with UConn. Army finished last season with a 7-2 dual meet record en route to a second place finish at the Patriot League Championships.
Columbia has won three straight meets against the Black Knights, including a 160-140 triumph in West Point last fall.
SCOUTING PENN
The Quakers visit Uris Pool to open up their season after finishing the 2018-19 campaign with an 8-2 dual meets record and placing third at the Ivy League Championships.
Although Columbia has won two of the last three meetings in the series, the Quakers earned the win in 2018, a 172-128 triumph in Philadelphia.
ON DECK
The Lions continue Ivy League action next Saturday, Nov. 16, facing the Yale Bulldogs at 1 p.m. inside Uris Natatorium.
