The Lions will begin the ITA National Team Indoor Championship on Friday at 1 p.m. ET
CHICAGO — For the fourth time in five seasons, Columbia is one of 16 teams in the nation heading to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship this weekend in Chicago. The Lions will open up action against No. 3 seed Wake Forest (9-1) on Friday at 1 p.m. ET at the Midtown Athletic Club.
The Lions (3-0) were slotted as the No. 14 seed in the tournament after defeating Virginia Tech and Dartmouth in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
Friday's meeting will be a rematch of last season's Sweet 16 bout which saw Columbia fall, 4-1, to the eventual national champions.
Live scoring, live streaming, brackets and additional tournament information can be found here.
SCOUTING THE DEMON DEACONS
Looking to defend their Indoor National Championship from a season ago, No. 1 Wake Forest enters Friday's match with an overall 9-1 record. Their lone loss came on Feb. 8, falling 5-2 at No. 13 Virginia. The Deacons have tallied ranked wins over then-No. 24 Arizona State and then-No. 20 Oklahoma State.
Wake Forest's roster features four ranked singles players, including top-ranked Petros Chrysochos.
LIONS IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
In the first singles and doubles rankings of the spring season released Feb. 6, Columbia proved to be one of the top teams in the nation with five ranked singles players and two ranked doubles teams.
The Lions are one of just four Division I teams in the nation to have five or more ranked singles players, joining only USC (7), Florida (5) and Illinois (5). Sophomore Jack Lin claimed Columbia top singles ranking at No. 11, followed by No. 32 Adam Ambrozy, No. 44 Jackie Tang, No. 54 Victor Pham and No. 105 Jason Lui.
Columbia's duo of Will Matheson and Lin came in at No. 22 in the doubles rankings. It's the 11th-straight rankings in which the tandem has been nationally ranked, dating back to Feb. 20, 2018. Ambrozy and Tang come in not far behind, earning the No. 24 spot.
LAST TIME OUT
The Lions are coming off a 6-1 victory over nearby St. John's on Sunday at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center. The Lions won all three doubles matches in the outing before winning five-straight singles courts.
ON DECK
The winner of Friday's match will face the victor of No. 11 Notre Dame vs. No. 7 UCLA on Saturday at 1 p.m.
