ITHACA, N.Y.—The No. 34 ranked Columbia women's tennis team set a new school-record with its 12th consecutive victory as the Lions opened Ivy League play with a 4-0 win over Cornell Saturday at Reis Tennis Center. The victory improves Columbia to 12-1 overall and 1-0 in the Ivy League, while Cornell drops to 6-10 overall and 0-1 in Ivy League play.
Columbia earned its 12
th straight victory, which tops the previous school-record of 11 consecutive wins from Feb. 28-April 13, 2014.
Columbia got off to a fast start as it took a 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point. First-year
Akanksha Bhan and sophomore
Paulina Ferrari defeated Cornell's Katherine Nguyen and Maria Adiaconitei 6-0 and senior
Andrea Kevakian and sophomore
Christie Wan registered a 6-2 win over Cornell's Mariko Iinuma and Sarah Campbell.
The Lions then wrapped up the win as sophomore
Jennifer Kerr, senior
Andrea Kevakian and first-year
Melissa Sakar each claimed singles wins. Kerr won a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Nguyen at No. 1 singles, Kevakian defeated Campbell 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and Sakar claimed a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles over Adiaconitei.
Columbia (12-1, 1-0 Ivy League) is back in action next weekend when it continues Ivy League play at Yale (Saturday, April 6) and at Brown (Sunday, April 7). First-serve for both matches is at 1 p.m.
