Winning streak extends to nine victories; Akanksha Bhan, Jennifer Kerr, Andrea Kevakian and Melissa Sakar win singles matches.
NEW YORK—The No. 35 ranked Columbia women's tennis team won its ninth consecutive match as it registered a 4-1 victory over LIU Brooklyn Saturday at Dick Savitt Tennis Center.
The win completes Columbia's four-match homestand and improves the Lions to 9-1 on the year. LIU Brooklyn drops to 5-5 on the year. Columbia is also undefeated at Dick Savitt Tennis Center.
"Credit to LIU for playing solid doubles today," Columbia Head Coach Ilene Weintraub said. "We had a few players out with illness and mid-terms. I was very pleased with our singles performance. Every single player took care of their court and was able to convert on the first set. That put us in a great position as a team."
"I was very proud of how they battled in singles and came together on every court."
LIU Brooklyn came out strong as it claimed the doubles point and a 1-0 lead by parlaying a 6-1 win at No. 3 by Malin Leysen and Jennifer Gogova over Columbia senior Andrea Kevakian and first-year Yekaterina Alferova and a 6-1 win at No. 1 by Anna Grigoryan and Ana Leonte over the Lions' sophomore Paulina Ferrari and first-year Akanksha Bhan. The Lions were leading the No. 2 doubles match 4-1.
But LIU Brooklyn's lead was short-lived though as Columbia stormed back in singles, building early leads on all six courts.
Sophomore Jennifer Kerr tied up the match when he won a 6-1, 6-1 victory over LIU Brooklyn's Grigoryan at No. 1 singles. First-year Melissa Sakar quickly followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles over Sasha Bollweg. That gave the Lions a 2-1 lead. Kevakian then defeated LIU Brooklyn's Malin Leysen 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles for a 3-1 lead.
Bhan clinched the team victory with a 6-1, 6-2 No. 2 singles win over LIU Brooklyn's Jessica Brzozowska.
Columbia was without sophomore Christie Wan, who did not suit up due to illness.
Following a week off, Columbia takes its spring break trip to Las Vegas where it will face UNLV on March 21 and UT San Antonio on March 22. The Lions open Ivy League competition at Cornell on March 30.
