No. 1 Cornell Gets By No. 3 Columbia for Geiger Cup

The Big Red claimed the trophy, but the Lions did come up victorious in the third and fourth varsity races.

ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 3 Columbia lightweight rowing team fell to No. 1 Cornell Saturday morning, allowing the Geiger Cup to return to the Big Red. The Lions' third and fourth varsity boats turned in victories to help Columbia split four races on the morning.

In the competition for the hardware, Cornell got out to an early lead in the first 500 meters and went in front stern-to-bow by the midway point. The Lions pulled slightly closer in the third quarter of the race, but the Big Red went on to win by nearly a length.

Columbia's fourth varsity started the day with a 1.1-second victory over the Big Red and the Lions' third varsity edged Cornell by two seconds. However, in the second varsity, the Big Red came up with an open-water victory.

Columbia races again tomorrow morning against Dartmouth for the Subin Cup at Overpeck Park. The second varsity eight is set to begin at 9 a.m., followed by the varsity eight at 9:20 a.m.
