Lions Finish in Second Place at Ivy League Championship

Daniel Core, John Robertson earn All-Ivy League honors, Arjun Puri boosts Lions with an incredible five-under-par 66 on Sunday as Lions finish in second place by one stroke.
EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J.—After combining for the weekend's lowest team round score with a one-under-par 283, the Columbia men's golf team finished in second place by one stroke during Sunday's final round at the 2019 Ivy League Championship at Hidden Creek Golf Club.
Columbia began the day in third place in the team standings but quickly moved up the leaderboard when sophomore Arjun Puri fired a five-under-par 66, the best round for an individual on the weekend, first-year Daniel Core shot a one-under-par 70, sophomore John Robertson followed with a two-over-par 73 and junior Nick Brisebois finished with a three-over-par 74. The Lions finished at 24-over-par 303-290-283-876, just one stroke behind team champion Princeton at 23-over-par 875. Columbia's 876 marked the school's lowest team score in 10 years and since the Lions won the Ivy League title with an 858 in 2009.
First-year Daniel Core and sophomore John Robertson both tied for seventh place and will earn All-Ivy League honors.
Core, who finished at seven-over-par 79-71-70-220, improved each day in the event. He was in 29th place after Friday's first round, moved into contention to 16th place after Saturday's round, then moved up nine spots to seventh place on Sunday. On Sunday, Core tore up the front nine, notching three birdies en route to a two-under-par 34 then totaled two birdies on the back nine and was primed to finish even higher until he shot a six on the par-4 18th hole. On Saturday, he made the largest jump in the field as he sank birdies on holes 8, 14 and 17. On Friday, Core totaled two birdies and shot a one-under-par 35 on the front nine. He finished with 10 birdies, the second-most in the field.
Robertson played consistent golf all weekend as he finished at seven-over-par 76-71-73-220. On Sunday, he recorded an eagle on the par-five 17 hole and totaled 13 pars. Robertson made his move on Saturday as he vaulted up seven spots in the standings and entered Sunday in ninth place. His 71 in Saturday's second round ranked as the third lowest round in the field. He finished the day with three birdies on holes 5, 7 and 17 and totaled 13 pars. On Friday, Robertson totaled one birdie on the afternoon. He led the Lions with 37 pars on the weekend.
Puri had the most interesting weekend among the Lions' quintet as he finished the three-day weekend in 15th place with a nine-over-par 81-75-66-222. Puri's 66 represented his career-low round score and was the lowest round vs. par (-5) ever carded by a Columbia golfer in the Ivy League Championship. It also ranked tied for the lowest-ever round score in Columbia's Ivy League Championship history, tied for the third lowest round in school history and tied for the third lowest round vs. par in school history (-5).
Puri began Sunday's final round in 32nd place but quickly established himself on the front nine, converting three birdies on holes 1, 5 and 9 and carding six pars. Then on the back nine, he holed three consecutive birdies on holes 15, 16 and 17 with five pars and only one bogey. At the end of the day, he had moved up 17 spots in the standings. He concluded the weekend tied for the second most birdies with 10.
First-year Derek Kim finished in 15th place with a nine-over-par 74-73-75-222. He was a model of consistency on Sunday with three birdies. On Saturday, he carded birdies on holes 3, 8 and 13. In Friday's first round, he finished with one birdie and eight pars on the back nine and was the only player in the field to register an eagle as he sank a 2 on the par-4 eight hole.
Junior Nick Brisebois concluded the weekend in 26th place at 14-over-par 74-79-74-227. On Sunday he hit back-to-back birdies on holes 4 and 5. On Friday, Brisebois carded two birdies on holes 5 and 8 and totaled a team-high 12 pars. He has 22 pars on the weekend so far.
Princeton won the team title after shooting a 23-over-par 288-296-291-875 while Yale's James Nicholas won the individual title at two-over-par 215.
