Lions to compete in The Doc Gimmler Saturday and Sunday
NEW YORK — The Columbia men's golf team opens its 2026-27 season this weekend at The Doc Gimmler. The annual event, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, is hosted by St. John's at Bethpage State Park, Red Course.
The opening two rounds are scheduled to be played consecutively on Saturday with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. This year's field features 14 participating teams: Boston College, Bryant, Columbia, Hofstra, Iona, Lafayette, Lehigh, LIU, Providence, St. John's, Rhode Island, Towson, UConn and Yale. The tees at the Red Course will be set to 7,092 yards with a par of 70.
Columbia's lineup for the tournament will see sophomore Alejandro Formosa and Neil Kulkarni lead the way in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. A pair of first-years, Charles Lange and Tom Yu, will play at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Junior Ryan Keyes also makes the five-player team lineup at No. 5. Two more Lions, sophomore Sam Johnson and first-year Spencer Carter, will compete as individuals.
The Lions have a history of success in this event, finishing fourth the last time they competed at it in 2024, and winning it back in 2023. The 2023-24 team set a 54-hole team record to win that year's tournament, entering Sunday's final round with a 15-shot lead and closing their record-breaking tournament at 29-under-par 811.
A live leaderboard is available for fans to follow the action. Fans can find it on the College Golf Scoreboard, powered by Clippd.
The 2026-27 Lions hope to build off the momentum they ended last season with. After winning the Columbia Autumn Invitational at Lake Placid Club last fall, they ended the spring with a tie for second at Wiltwyck Golf Club in the Roar-EE Invitational (Apr. 18), and a third-place finish at the 2026 Ivy League Championship at Baltusrol (Apr. 24-26). The Lions shot their best team round of the tournament on Sunday of 2-over-par 290. Alejandro Formosa and Ryan Keyes each turned in a 1-over-par 73, while Neil Kulkarni completed the counting scores with a 2-over 74.
Formosa polished off an impressive rookie campaign by finishing in solo seventh in the championship at 5-over par (74-74-73). He ended the season with a team-best 73.72 stroke average. Kulkarni was close behind at 74.10.
Columbia welcomes a trio of first-year newcomers to the roster: Spencer Carter, Charles Lange and Tom Yu. All three will look to bolster the depth of the youthful squad, which comprises six underclassmen.
