LEONIA, N.J. – The No. 3 Columbia lightweight rowing team was edged by Harvard for the Wales-Kirrane Cup Sunday morning at Overpeck Park. On the day, the Crimson took four of five races against the Lions and Georgetown, who competed as a guest in the regatta.
With nearly perfect conditions, each event turned in fast times. In the varsity eight, Harvard inched ahead in the first 1,000-meters, held about a four-seat lead at the midway point and went ahead stern-to-bow before Columbia made its move in the final 500. The Lions closed, but ran out of water as the Crimson took the trophy for the second consecutive year.
The second varsity eight ran its winning streak up to 13 with an open-water victory. All three crews got out of the gates quickly, however, the Lions led by open water at the halfway mark and never looked back.
In the third varsity, Columbia and Harvard broke away from the Hoyas early. The Crimson crept out in front by nearly a length and maintained that cushion for the final half of the race. Harvard also came up victorious in the fourth varsity eight when the Lions had some issues holding their line. Despite the difficulties, Columbia pulled in just two seconds behind the Crimson.
The regatta concluded with a pair of Harvard four's competing against one crew from Columbia. Both Crimson boats surged ahead early and came away with a convincing win.
Columbia returns to action next weekend in Philadelphia when they face Penn and Yale for the Dodge Cup.
