Lions take on Hobart, Navy and George Washington for Stevenson Cup Sunday
NEW YORK – The No. 14 Columbia heavyweight rowing team rounds out the regular season with Hobart, Navy and George Washington in the Stevenson Cup regatta Sunday on Mercer Lake.
WHAT'S ON THE LINE
The Maxwell Stevenson Cup is raced between Navy and Columbia, and was named after the top athletics administrator at Columbia in the 1940s. The cup was first presented in 1950.
COLUMBIA'S STATUS
The Lions stuck around with a pair of top-10 crews, but fell to Boston University and Syracuse in the varsity eight of last weekend's Lusins Trophy Regatta. Columbia faced adverse conditions for the second consecutive week, a trend that is unlikely to change with the anticipated forecast in the Northeast. The result did allow Columbia to move up one spot in the IRA/USRowing Coaches Poll, however.
HOBART'S STATUS
The Statesmen will take part in the Liberty League Championships Friday before coming to Mercer Lake Sunday. Hobart's race last weekend was cancelled due to the conditions and it last competed on April 13 at the Stanford Invitational, competing against California, Stanford and Oregon State. The Statesmen's varsity and second varsities fell in three races on the weekend.
NAVY'S STATUS
The Midshipmen took second, finishing behind Harvard and in front of Penn, for the Adams Cup last weekend. Navy placed second in all five races on the day that featured difficult water conditions and a 6 a.m. start to racing due to weather in Boston.
GEORGE WASHINGTON'S STATUS
The Colonials were unable to race due to hazardous conditions. GW raced in its own two-day invitational on April 12-13, finishing 1-3 for the weekend.
A LOOK BACK…
Despite fast conditions, the varsity eight fell behind early to the Mids and Colonials and never quite found their rhythm. GW and Navy handled a tailwind and bumpy water in the last 750 meters to remain in front of Columbia and Hobart. The Lions were in a position to take third, but a strong sprint by the Statesman surged them about a half deck ahead of Columbia. The Lions' third varsity eight came up victorious with GW and Navy taking the second and fourth varsity races.
NEXT UP
Columbia will have next weekend off before heading to Lake Quinsigamond to compete at EARC Sprints on Sunday, May 19.
