Lions finish eighth in points standings
PENNSAUKEN, N.J. – Juniors Liza Ray and Sabina Maurer were selected All-Ivy League honorees to highlight Columbia's performance at the Ivy League Women's Rowing Championship, which took place Sunday at Cooper River Park.
Ray earned First Team All-Ivy League recognition while Maurer was named Second Team All-Ivy League. The all-league honors are the first of each of their collegiate careers. Both rowed in the varsity eight all season and led the Lions to their second-straight victory in the Woodbury Cup. The All-Ivy League formatting includes the best rowers from all eight schools. Coaches nominated five places prior to the event and teams earned All-Ivy recognition based on their finish.
Columbia was unable to qualify for the grand finals in any of the boats that counted toward the overall points standings (V8, 2V8, V4A). The varsity eight overtook Dartmouth at the 1,500-meter mark in the morning prelims but was edged at the finish by 0.6 seconds for the last spot in the grand final. The second varsity eight missed out on its grand final by two seconds, while the varsity four came up 11 seconds short.
The Lions redeemed themselves in the petite final of the varsity eight with a nine-second, head-to-head victory over Cornell. The varsity four dominated its petite final against the Big Red by 24 seconds, while the second varsity eight came up 12.5 seconds behind Dartmouth.
In the end, Columbia earned nine points toward the NCAA final points standings and finished in eighth. Princeton recorded 48 points to win the team title and also took home the both the Ivy League Championship and Sally P. Shoemaker Trophy with a time of 6:23.476 in the varsity eight grand final.
