NEW YORK — The Columbia men's swimming and diving team will begin the 2020 portion of its season on Tuesday, Jan. 14, hosting the Cornell Big Red inside Percy Uris Natatorium at 1 p.m. ET.
As with all home meets, admission is free to all fans. Live results for the meet will be available via Meet Mobile.
The dual will be the first for the Lions since hosting Harvard on Nov. 22, where Columbia (3-1, 2-1 Ivy League) was handed its first loss of the season, falling 129.5-169.5. The Lions had five wins in the meeting, including claiming top honors in both the 200-yard medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. Senior Nian-Guo Liu had a pair of individual victories in the 200 free (1:37.08) and 200 IM (1:49.59), while junior Albert Gwo won the 50 free in 20.05.
Most recently, Columbia's swimmers competed at Princeton's Big Al Invitational, Dec. 6-8, while the divers attended the Rutgers Invitational, Dec. 4-7. The Big Al Invite was highlighted by a school-record swim from Gwo in the 50 free, clocking in at 19.50 to place fourth overall in the event, which currently sits as the No. 17 time in the country this season. Sophomore Jonas Kistorp claimed a victory in the 100 butterfly with an NCAA 'B' cut time of 46.79. At the Rutgers Invite, first-year Ben Blizard swept the diving events, taking first on 1-meter (272.60), 3-meter (291.65) and platform (263.85).
SCOUTING CORNELL
The Big Red visit Uris with a 3-3 overall record, including a 1-3 mark in conference meets. Cornell started its season with back-to-back wins over St. Bonaventure and Dartmouth, before falling to Harvard, Princeton and Penn. The Big Red wrapped up 2019 with a 147-91 win over Binghamton on Nov. 26.
Columbia has been the victor in each of the last eight meetings between the two programs, with Cornell's last win in the series coming on Jan. 21, 2011.
ON DECK
The Lions will travel to face Brown on Saturday, Jan. 18, with the meet beginning at noon.
