Lions Open Spring Season With Sunday Doubleheader

On Sunday at Dick Savitt Tennis Center, Lions to host LIU at 11:30 a.m. and Sacred Heart at 4 p.m.
NEW YORK—Columbia Women's Tennis opens its 2020 dual match spring season on Sunday when it hosts both LIU and Sacred Heart for a doubleheader at Dick Savitt Tennis Center. The Lions play LIU at 11:30 a.m., then take on Sacred Heart at 4 p.m.
Columbia and LIU will play their first dual match of the year, while Sacred Heart enters the weekend with a 2-3 overall record and 1-3 record in the MAAC. Columbia is 6-0 all-time vs. LIU and 1-0 all-time vs. Sacred Heart.
Columbia is coming off a successful fall season which saw its players record a 96-41 overall singles record and 45-21 overall doubles record.
Sophomore Akanksha Bhan enters the spring 2020 season ranked No. 65 in the ITA national rankings. Bhan went 13-4 during the fall season, which included an extended run at the ITA All-American event in which she became the first women's tennis player at Columbia to advance to the ITA All-American Main Draw. In addition, Bhan and Paulina Ferrari earned a bid in doubles, while Christie Wan and Jennifer Kerr each competed in singles and doubles.
Other Lions with superb singles records include Michelle Xu (14-1), Melissa Sakar (12-2), Shivani Amineni (10-2), Julia Haynes (6-3), and Jennifer Kerr (8-4). In doubles, the Lions are led by Bhan/Ferrari (9-4), Wan and Melissa Sakar (7-2) and Hayes/Xu (10-4).
Head Coach Ilene Weintraub, CC '02 enters her 13th season at the helm of the Columbia women's tennis program. The winningest coach in school history, Weintraub guided the Lions to their first Ivy League Championship in 2013, led the program to a top-40 national ranking in 2016, captured two ECAC Championships (2014 and 2016) and has recruited three national top-15 recruiting classes (No. 6 in 2015, No. 10 in 2017 and No. 12 in 2018) and signed four national top-20 recruiting classes in the last six years to Columbia. She was named the ITA Northeast Region Coach of the Year in both 2014 and 2016.
Weintraub is joined by first-year assistant coach AJ Nelson and volunteer assistant coach Carlos Carrera. Nelson is in his third year and Carrera is in his second year with the program.
