NEW YORK – The Columbia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, in conjunction with the Office of Multicultural Affairs and University Life, is proud to host its first annual Pride Night during a women's basketball game on Friday, March 6, at Levien Gymnasium.
The first 500 fans in attendance for the 7 p.m. tip against Princeton will receive a free Pride Night t-shirt. Fans are encouraged to show their support on social media before, during and after the event by using #LionPride.
Tickets to Columbia Pride Night can be purchased by visiting GoColumbiaLions.com/Tickets.
"Columbia is a place that is extremely inclusive and welcoming," Columbia women's basketball head coach Megan Griffith said. "I think having a Pride Night embodies and demonstrates how open and supportive we all are to the LGBTQ community. Everyone is welcome and everyone should feel like they are a part of what we're doing. Basketball is just a microcosm for all of this. I couldn't be prouder to have our team host this event."
The event will celebrate the University's LGBTQ community. The women's basketball team will wear branded Pride Night shooting shirts during pre-game warmups. There will also be in-game promotions featuring both on-campus and off-campus LGBTQ group leaders.
"We are beyond proud that our athletic department and our University are putting on this wonderful event," Campbell Family Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education Peter Pilling said. "It is extremely important that all members of our campus community feel comfortable and welcome at any event that we host. We look forward to hosting Pride Night and showcasing our continued commitment to the LGBTQ community."
LGBTQ @ Columbia services and resources exist to support all students to explore and better understand diverse queer and trans identities, experiences at Columbia and beyond. Additionally, it hopes to create a campus environment that is supportive and inclusive of student diversity in the area of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.
"Creating an inclusive campus community is a shared responsibility," said Vanessa Gonzalez-Siegel, Columbia University Associate Director of Multicultural Affairs & LGBTQ Outreach. "Engaging campus partners is critical to cultivating an inclusive community throughout the University. Having a Pride Night is exciting and I look forward to working with Athletics on continued efforts to better support and affirm Queer and Trans students at Columbia."
