Columbia senior Helen Wojdylo swam a personal-best time of 1:58.72 to claim third in the 200 IM
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Columbia senior Helen Wojdylo swam a lifetime best 1:58.72 to earn the bronze medal in the 200-yard individual medley, highlighting Columbia women's swimming and diving's second day at the 2020 Ivy League Championships. As it stands, Columbia is in fourth place in the team standings with 287 points.
"The Columbia women had a very solid first full day," said head coach Diana Caskey. "It's key to have great morning swims to make the scoring heats and we did a good job in the morning to do just that. Olivia Jubin's 500 and Helen's 200 IM provided exciting pivotal points in the evening. We're looking forward to session four tomorrow morning."
Sophomore Briget Rosendahl also made her way to a championship final on Thursday evening, picking up a seventh-place finish for the Lions on the 1-meter springboard with a score of 262.60. The field was extremely close, with third through eighth place having been decided by less than 15 points.
"It was really exciting," said Columbia diving coach Scott Donie. "Outstanding day for the women divers. It was an excellent contest from the top to the bottom, and our women really stepped it up. Very proud of how everyone competed."
First-year Livy Poulin (250.55) and sophomore Michelle Lee (243.50) also scored for Columbia in the 1-meter event, finishing 12th and 13th overall, respectively, after competing in the afternoon's consolation final.
Three Lions advanced to the 500-yard freestyle finals, led by first-year Jubin who raced her way to a win in the 'B' final and ninth-place showing overall with a time of 4:46.80, dropping nearly four seconds from her prelims time of 4:50.65. The finals time was the sixth-fastest of the evening session overall. Jessica Peng (19th, 4:57.56) and Clare MacNamara (24th, 5:03.49) rounded out the Columbia performances in the race.
After going 1:59.27 in the morning prelims, Wojdylo dropped to her personal-best 1:58.74 to take third in the 200 IM. The finish improves from her fifth-place showing at the 2019 championship meet. First-years Karen Liu and Isabella Fratesi each qualified for the 'B' final of the event, with Liu taking 14th overall in 2:03.03 and Fratesi claiming 16th at 2:03.38.
Senior Audrey Richter registered Columbia's highest finish in the 50 free, notching a 14th-place time of 23.35.
The closing 200 free relay saw the Lions take eighth, as the quartet of Richter (23.42), Clare Larsen (23.76), Tina Le (23.35) and Isabelle Arevalo (23.34) clocked in at 1:33.87.
The Ivy League Championships continue Friday, with the preliminary session kicking off at 11 a.m. ET and finals beginning at 6 p.m. Events will include the 3-meter prelims, 1,000 free, 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 400 medley relay.
