Four Lions Score Multiple Goals as Siena Gets by Columbia

The Columbia lacrosse team fell to Siena, 14-11, at Hickey Field on Saturday afternoon

LOUDENVILLE, N.Y. – Four different Lions scored multiple goals, as Columbia lacrosse dropped a hard-fought battle at Siena, 14-11, on Saturday afternoon at Hickey Field.

Seven different Lions contributed goals in the outing, including four players with multiple scores. Sophomore midfielder Katie Lutz, junior attacker Alexandria Absey, senior midfielder Orna Madigan and junior midfielder Devon Stuzin each notched a pair of goals, while junior attacker Chelsea Witteck, sophomore attacker Rachel Graff and senior midfielder Fallon Quinn had one apiece.

Siena (1-1) jutted out to an early 2-0 lead with consecutive goals to start the game before Lutz halved the deficit on a free-position goal with 24:51 on the clock. The two teams would trade goals until the Lions used back-to-back scores from Witteck and Madigan to knot things up at 4-4 with 9:00 remaining in the first period. The teams would head to the locker room with an even 5-5 score as Stuzin tied things up with 3:38 on the clock.

Taking its first lead of the game, Columbia (0-3) would go ahead 6-5 out of the break as Madigan net her second goal of the game, but Siena would regain a one-goal advantage with two-straight goals. Another score from Stuzin made it 7-7, before the Saints took a 9-7 lead at the 20:14 mark and Columbia would call a timeout. Out of the huddle, Siena would tack on another, but a draw control from Stuzin would give the Graff the opportunity to score her first goal of the day on a dish from Witteck.

Another two scores from the Saints would lift them to a 13-9 lead, before Absey put two in the cage in less than a minute span to bring the score back to 13-11 with 10:37 left in the game. Turnovers would plague the Lions in the final 10 minutes, as Siena scored the final goal of the game.

Sophomore keeper Ryan Schlageter once again played all 60 minutes in the cage, making eight saves.

Columbia had a 14-13 advantage in draw controls in the game, plus a 12-4 edge in free position shots. Six of the Lions' goals were off free-position attempts.

The Lions return home for the Ivy League opener next Saturday, Feb. 29, facing off against No. 9 Princeton. Opening draw is set for noon inside Wien Stadium.
