CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Columbia men's swimming and diving team moved into third place in the team standings at the 2020 Ivy League Championships on Friday after a solid day of action at Blodgett Pool, including taking gold in the 400-yard medley relay.
Completely the sweep of the Ivy medley relays after winning gold in the 200 medley two days prior, the Lions grouping of senior
Cole Stevens (47.20),
Nian-Guo Liu (24.67),
Jonas Kistorp (45.92) and
Albert Gwo (42.30) found their way to the top of the podium once again with a school-record mark of 3:08.31.
A chance for big points came in the 100 butterfly, as three Lions made their way into the A final. Kistorp led the way with a third-place showing in the event at 46.53, followed by Gwo in sixth with a time of 46.86 and sophomore
Hayden Liu taking seventh in 47.49.
After posting the top time in the morning's preliminary session with a school-record time of 1:34.31,
Nian-Guo Liu earned silver in the 200 freestyle, going 1:34.98 in the finals.
Another two Columbia swimmers made their way to the podium in the 100 backstroke, with Stevens registering a lifetime best 47.14 to earn bronze in the event. Junior
Baptiste Leger came in eighth overall, going 48.80. After a bronze finish in the 100 fly, Kistorp won the B final of the 100 backstroke in 48.44, while
Joey Licht (49.15) and
Hayden Liu (49.50) doubled up as well, finishing 13th and 15th, respectively.
Sophomore Licht earned a spot in the 400 IM championship final after going 3:53.47 in prelims, and went on to take seventh after touching the wall in 3:55.38.
The Lions earned important points from
John Scanlon in the 1,000 freestyle with a sixth-place finish at 9:03.63. Sophomore
Shawn Lou also scored for Columbia in the event, taking 17th overall in 9:14.83.
For the second night in a row, first-year diver
Ben Blizard had the Lions' best finish, taking 13th overall with a score of 286.70, while senior
Shinya Kondo also made the consolation final posting a 15
th-place showing at 269.55.
"Today was all about Shinya," said Columbia diving coach
Scott Donie. "This was his last meet and I feel so grateful to have had the chance to coach him for four years. This was a great way to finish his career. I am so proud of him and it was great to have him in that final with our young rising star Ben."
First-year
Michael Chang clocked Columbia's fastest time in the 100 breaststroke, winning the consolation final with a personal-best time of 54.44.
