No. 21 Lions Shutout St. John's and Rhode Island

Columbia wins eighth and ninth straight victories in Friday doubleheader; Lions complete February with a perfect 9-0 record.
NEW YORK—The No. 21 ranked Columbia women's tennis team won its eighth and ninth consecutive matches with back-to-back shutout doubleheader wins over St. John's (4-0) and Rhode Island (4-0) Friday at Dick Savitt Tennis Center. With the pair of wins, Columbia improves its overall record to 11-2 in dual matches and concludes the month of February with a perfect 9-0 record.
The Lions are also on a nine-match win streak. Following are recaps from Friday's doubleheader action:
Columbia is back in action in two weeks when it travels to Miami, Fla. for its annual Spring Break competition trip. The Lions will take on Broward College (scrimmage on March 14), East Tennessee (March 17), Florida International (March 19) and Florida Atlantic (March 21).
COLUMBIA 4, RHODE ISLAND 0
Columbia registered its fifth shutout of the year with a 4-0 victory over Rhode Island.
Columbia swept the doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Jennifer Kerr and sophomore Melissa Sakar claimed a 6-2 No. 1 doubles match over URI's Erin Chratian and Nadia Rajan. Minutes later, first-years Michelle Xu and Julia Haynes won a 6-2 victory over URI's Sydney Chratian and Paulina Loredo.
Columbia then built big leads in all six singles matches. Sophomore Akanksha Bhan won a 6-1, 6-0 No. 1 singles match over URI's Erin Chratian, then Kerr claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over Rhode Island's Tiara Higuchi. With leads in the four other matches, Xu was the first to record the clinching win, a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Sydney Chration at No. 4 singles.
Rhode Island fell to 3-4 on the year.

In its morning match, Columbia blanked St. John's 4-0.
The Lions began the day by capturing the doubles point, which was decided in dramatic tiebreaker fashion. St. John's took the advantage with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles by Milika Genkova and Kajsa Stegrell over Columbia first-years Shivani Amineni and Michelle Xu. The Lions battled back to negate the advantage with a win at No. 1 doubles as Akanksha Bhan and Paulina Ferrari claimed a 6-3 victory over St. John's Jessica Livianu and Gabriela Tenorio. Columbia junior Jennifer Kerr and first-year Shivani Amineni sealed the point as they battled off two match points to register a 7-6 (8-6) tiebreaker win over St. John's Najah Dawson and Oceane Garibal at No. 2 doubles.
Columbia swept the singles competition in quick fashion as Kerr won a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles over St. John's Garibal and Xu made it 3-0 Columbia with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles over St. John's Camila Ordonez. Haynes clinched the victory at No. 6 singles with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 victory over St. John's Willa Bay Breunich. Sophomore Melissa Sakar was 30 seconds and one point away from claiming a victory over St. John's Genkova.
St. John's fell to 6-5 on the year.
