Storey And Campbell Take Titles In Busy Weekend For The Lions

Senior Katie Wasserman clocked the 15th best time in the country in the One-Mile at the Camel City Invite.
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y./NEW YORK/WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – It was a busy weekend for Columbia Track & Field, with juniors Grace Campbell (high jump) and Jackson Storey (800-Meter Run) taking titles in their respective events, and senior Katie Wasserman clocking a personal best time, which is also the 15th best One-Mile Run time in the country as the Lions competed in three different competitions over the weekend.
Campbell and Storey took their wins at the UAlbany Winter Classic, at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, New York on Friday, Feb. 7, while Wasserman locked up her PR time of 4:40.29 at the Camel City Invitational on Feb. 7 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina at the JDL Fast Track. Junior Jack Pihlkar, competing at the historic 113th Millrose Games on Thursday, Feb. 6 at The Armory in New York, New York, finished third in the weight throw as the Lions locked up several top marks across the three different competitions.
HOW IT HAPPENED (WOMEN'S EVENTS): In a field that included former World Champion and 2016 Olympic Bronze medalist Jenny Simpson, Wasserman set her sights on a national mark and she got just that, finishing sixth in the One-Mile run in 4:40.29 which is the 15th best time in the country.
At the UAlbany Winter Classic, the Lions collected a handful of top finishes on the track, with the best finish coming from junior Madelyn Sessler, who finished fifth in the 60-Meter Hurdles, crossing the line at 9.08. In the 1,000-Meter Run, senior Emily Digman locked up a fifth-place finish with a time of 2:58.36, while in the One-Mile, sophomore Linnaea Kavulich finished seventh, clocking a PR time of 5:02.88.
While in the field, the Lion women locked up a win at the UAlbany Winter Classic, with Campbell providing the first-place finish in the high jump. Campbell, looking to snag a win, cleared a height of 1.70m to come away with the win, while in the long jump first-year Tiffany Bautista locked up a second-place finish with a PR leap of 5.70m.
The Lion women did have a solid mark in the weight throw at the Millrose Games, as sophomore Haley Montgomery tossed a mark of 13.45m and for Montgomery it was a solid weekend overall as she also competed at the UAlbany Winter Classic, tossing a PR mark of 13.76m to finish 27th.
HOW IT HAPPENED (MEN'S EVENTS): At the UAlbany Winter Classic, Storey gave the Lion men the best finish of the weekend, clocking a time of 1:51.34 in the 800m to take first in the event, and the mark is the best time Storey has run in the 800m this season. A pair of top five finishes were collected in the long-distance events, with junior Aaron Breene clocking a PR time of 2:28.18 to finish third in the 1,000m and sophomore David Vorbach finishing fifth in the One-Mile with a PR time of 4:15.51.
In the field at the UAlbany Winter Classic, first-year Will O'Brien cleared a second-place PR height of 4.80m in the Pole Vault, while senior Hunter Hasley tossed a mark of 16.90m in the weight throw to finish fifth overall. As for Pihlkar's third-place mark of 18.76m at the Millrose Games, it was his third best mark of the season.
