Lions Collect Solid Results At CSA Individual National Championships

Ellie McVeigh won the Holleran West consolation bracket while several Lions made semifinal runs.

PHILADELPHIA – Ellie McVeigh's first-place finish in the Holleran West consolation bracket at the College Squash Association, along with main bracket semifinal runs from Jane Pincus (Holleran South) and Nicole Kendall (Holleran West), highlighted Columbia Women's Squash's weekend at the CSA Individual Championships hosted by Penn at the Penn Squash Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED: In the Ramsay bracket, the main National Championship draw, Habiba Mohamed opened her weekend with a win in three sets over Stanford's Elena Wagenmans, winnings 12-10, 11-3, 11-1, but a three set loss to Georgina Kennedy (Harvard), 11-2, 11-4, 11-0, would end Mohamed's run in the Ramsay bracket.  McVeigh dropped her opening match, 11-9, 11-2, 11-4, to Julia Ward (Williams) to fall into the consolation bracket of the Holleran West draw, but she would not be deterred by the opening loss.

The next three matches would go McVeigh's way, as she battled in a four set consolation quarterfinals match against Ona Prokes (Drexel), winning 11-8, 11-5, 7-11, 13-11 to move into the consolation semifinals.  A three-set win, 11-8, 11-7, 11-7, over Columbia teammate Elizabeth Lentz, moved McVeigh into the consolation finals, were McVeigh took down Nanna Carleke, 11-4, 11-2, 11-4, to win the Holleran West Consolation finals title, giving McVeigh a ninth-place finish in the Holleran West bracket.

In the same Holleran West bracket which saw McVeigh finish ninth in, Kendall made a run in the main bracket, advancing to the semifinals, before falling short of the finals.  Kendall opened her weekend with an 11-6, 11-6, 11-4 win over Caroline Glaser (Bowdoin), before coming back against Morgan Steelman (Princeton), 8-11, 12-10, 13-11, 11-7, to advance to the semis.  In the semifinals match, Kendall lost to Hannah Craig (Harvard), 11-5, 12-10, 9-11, 11-6, ending her weekend just short of the finals.

While in the Holleran South bracket, Pincus made a run of her own, advancing to the semifinals, before falling out of the tournament.  Pincus opened her weekend with a three-set win, 15-13, 11-4, 11-7, over Mihiliya Kalahe Arachchige (Mt. Holyoke) to advance to the main draw quarterfinals.  In her next match, Pincus needed four sets, but she would come away with an, 11-5, 11-13, 11-6, 11-2, win over Mariam Mansoor (Colby) to head into the semis.  Despite falling to Anna Hughes (Drexel) in the finals, Pincus did not make it easy for Hughes, as the match would go five sets, 11-13, 7-11, 11-2, 11-8, 11-6, before Pincus lost ending her tournament after a solid run.
