DURHAM, N.H. — New Hampshire scored twice in the fourth quarter to force overtime and went on to win in overtime, 3-2, against the Columbia field hockey team Sunday. The Lions (7-7) took a 2-0 lead into the half, but the Wildcats played a strong final 30 minutes to earn the comeback victory.
Columbia netted a pair in the second quarter to cap a strong first half.
Ellie Decker, who returned to action yesterday against Dartmouth, found space down the middle and fired a low shot into the right side of the cage to put the Lions in front in the 22
nd minute. Less than two minutes later, Decker shuffled a pass to her right and found
Jeannine Turgeon, who converted the chance for her first career tally.
The second half saw New Hampshire come out with a renewed focused. Some strong play from goalkeeper
Alexa Conomikes and the Lions' back line kept it 2-0 after three quarters, but the Wildcats continued to dictate play in the fourth.
In the 49
th minute, Ava Mariani was able to pick up speed down the right side and centered a pass to Tia Raspante. Rasponte was left one-on-one with Conomikes and found the back of the net to cut the deficit in half. The Wildcats evened things up off a corner in the 55
th minute when Bloem van den Brekel ripped a shot off the set piece.
Van den Brekel struck again with just 21 seconds left in the extra session with an unstoppable reverse chip shot at the top of the circle that just snuck under the crossbar and gave the Wildcats a senior day triumph.
