Columbia Hosts Brown And Yale In Ivy League Weekend

Columbia Volleyball welcomes Brown and Yale for an Ivy League weekend on Morningside.
NEW YORK — With only four home matches left in the 2021 season, Columbia Volleyball (5-13, 2-6 IVY) returns to Schiller Court at Levien Gym to host a pair of Ivy League foes, with the Brown Bears (14-4, 7-1 IVY) visiting on Friday, Oct. 29 (7 p.m.), before the weekend wraps up with the Lions hosting the Yale Bulldogs (12-5, 5-3 IVY) on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 5 p.m.

WEEKEND RESULTS: Columbia, last weekend, made the final trip to Ithaca, New York, where they nearly pulled off a comeback against Ivy League foe Cornell, falling in a five-set thriller to the Big Red. The Lions were able to bounce back from dropping the first two sets, but in the fifth and final set, were unable to maintain their momentum and carry that to a comeback road win.
Noelle Foster was a force, scoring a set winning ace, along with adding a team-high 20 kills. While at the net, Soah Franklin had another great time controlling that action, finishing with seven blocks, helping the Lions tie a season-high with 12 team blocks.
LIONS IN THE IVY LEAGUE: The strong starts by Foster and Cadence Gronski have placed them at or near the top in several categories. Foster's offensive numbers have been leading the Lions and, in the league, she sits first in kills per set (4.00), total kills (260), total points (285.5) and points per set (4.39).
Gronski sits second in the league in assists per set (10.53), while Franklin sits eighth in blocks per set (0.98). Vanessa Pan (3.86) sits fifth in digs per set.
BROWN MATCHUP: Brown and Columbia meet for the second time this season and 58th time overall, with the Bears leading the overall series 38-19. In the previous matchup, the Bears won in four sets, and they bring a four-match winning streak into Friday's matchup.
Leading the Ivy League, Brown sits at 7-1 in the league, with their only league loss coming in the previous action, falling in five sets to Yale. Before that loss, the Bears had ripped off a 10-match winning streak, which included seven straight Ivy League wins.
Beau Vanderlaan leads the Bears in hitting percentage (.390), and her soild number puts her first in the league and 37th in the nation. Cierra Jenkins sits second in the league (48th/nation) in assists per set with 10.30 and Victoria Vo's 4.72 digs per set put her second in the league and 49th in the country.
Brown leads the league as a team in three different categories, leading in team assists (833), team kills (929) and team total blocks (157.0).
YALE MATCHUP: In what will be the 55th meeting all-time and the second of 2021, Columbia and Yale meet with the Bulldogs holding a 49-5 all-time advantage. Yale took the first meeting between these two sides in straight sets in a match played in New Haven, Connecticut.
The Bulldogs come in having won their previous two matches, taking down Penn in four sets before knocking off league leading Brown in five sets in their previous weekend of action. In their last four matches, the Bulldogs have gone 3-1, and will enter Saturday's match having opened their weekend in Ithaca to face Cornell on Friday, Oct. 29.
Carly Diehl leads the Bulldogs in aces per set (0.38) and that number places her second in the league, while her 9.34 assists per set put her third in the league. Maile Somera, sits third in the league in digs per set at 4.59 and that number is good enough to place her 63rd in the nation.
Yale's service game is one of the best in the nation, as their 1.86 aces per set place them 20th in the country and first in the league, while they sit first in the league in team service aces (119).
VENUE POLICIES: Fans must enter from the street level at the doors located at the southeast corner of 120th & Broadway. Fan capacity at Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium is limited to 70 percent of the venue's listed capacity per University Task Force protocols. All fans 12 and older must show proof of vaccination upon entry. All fans are required to wear a mask at all times. All fans must also fill out a COVID-19 protocol attestation.
