Columbia Volleyball dropped its Ivy League matchup with Brown in straight sets on Friday night on Morningside.
NEW YORK — Columbia Volleyball (5-14, 2-7 IVY) dropped its return to Morningside in straight sets to the Brown Bears (15-4, 8-1 IVY) in an Ivy League matchup on Schiller Court at Levien Gym on Friday, Oct. 29.
Noelle Foster led the Lions in kills with 13, while Emily Teehan added 11 kills to give Columbia a pair in double figures. While Lauren Cho spent a solid amount of time as the setter, recording a career-high assists with 15. Vanessa Pan added 14 digs and Teehan's 10 digs coupled with her double-digit kills gave her a double-double.
Despite Columbia holding Brown to .188 hitting, the lowest percentage for the Bears against an Ivy League opponent this season, a .947 service percentage gave Brown long rallies and it kept Columbia from battling back into the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The first set was the closest of the match, with 11 ties across the action and a pair of lead changes between the two sides. It was neck and neck across the entire set, with the score knotting up as late as 26-26.
In the set, Foster and Teehan both crushed five kills, and the Lions out hit Brown .189 to .081, but down the stretch the Bears had the answers that Columbia could not respond to, but three times from 24-24 the Lions kept Brown at bay, fighting off set point at 23-24, 24-25, 25-26, but a pair of Columbia errors gave Brown the final two points they needed to get the 28-26 set win.
Midway through the second set, Brown's Victoria Vo took to the service line with Columbia up 6-4, she held serve over the next eight Brown points. That stretch gave Brown the lead they needed to eventually take the second set, 25-12, giving them a 2-0 lead in the match.
In what would be the final set, Columbia battled hard, and the fact that there were a match-high eight lead changes to go along with nine ties is evident of Columbia's will to not go away. But, once again Brown's Vo seemed to be a difference at the service line, taking the serve at 16-16.
Vo held serve for the next four points, before a kill from Logan Harlock ended her run, but the score at that point was 19-17 in favor of the Bears. Over the final eight points decided, Brown took six and kept the Lions under 20 points giving the Bears the 25-19 third set win and a 3-0 win in the match.
GAME NOTES: Columbia held Brown to .188 hitting percentage, the lowest in an Ivy League match for the Bears this year … Cho finished with a career-high 15 assists … Teehan's double-double was her second of the season against Brown and her fourth of the season and second-straight.
