Columbia Volleyball dropped an Ivy League matchup at home in four sets to the Penn Quakers.
NEW YORK — Columbia Volleyball (4-9, 1-3 IVY), returning home from a weekend on the road, fell in four sets to the Penn Quakers (5-8, 2-2 IVY) in an Ivy League matchup on Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium on Friday, Oct. 8.
Columbia's night was highlighted by Shari Stenglein's career-high in assists (42) and 11 digs, recording the first double-double of her career. On the attack, Noelle Foster again, for the second straight match, smashed home a career-high in kills, finishing with a match-high 25 kills on .423 hitting.
HOW IT HAPPENED: During the first set, Penn held the lead for most of the set, passing the Lions at 4-4 and holding the lead throughout. But down the stretch, Columbia did close the gap and thanks to kills from Foster, Soah Franklin and Emily Teehan the Lions pulled within 24-22, holding off set point three times before falling on a kill by Penn's Ella Green, wrapping up the first set with Penn taking it 25-22.
In almost a carbon copy of the first set, Penn took the lead early on, this time scoring the first point, and for the remainder of the set the Quakers would hold their lead. Columbia did tie the score five times, and again down the stretch made a run at the Quakers. The Lions got within 21-20, but despite cutting Penn's lead were unable to pass the Quakers and fell 25-21 in the second set.
Columbia took the third set, thanks to big numbers from Foster and Teehan, with Foster finishing with six kills (.545) and Teehan crushing five during the set. Throughout the set, Columbia and Penn tied up the score seven times, with most of those ties coming from 16-16 on.
The final knotting of the score came at 22-22, but a service error from Penn's Madeline McGregor, an attack error by Penn's Green and a Teehan kill would give Columbia the 25-22 third set win, putting the overall score at 2-1 in Penn's favor.
During the fourth, and what would be final set, Penn hit .320, and right out of the gate took control of the action. The Lions got as close as 20-16, but Penn held the Lions to under 20 points in the set and came away with the 25-19 fourth set win to win the match 3-1.
