Lions Lose In Straight Sets To Princeton

Columbia Volleyball fell in straight sets to Princeton in an Ivy League matchup on Morningside.
NEW YORK — Columbia Volleyball (4-10, 1-4 IVY) dropped its Ivy League matchup with Princeton (11-2, 5-0 IVY) in straight sets on Saturday afternoon on Schiller Court at Levien Gym.
Despite the outcome, Shari Stenglein recorded her second-straight double-double, the first two of her career, racking up 14 assists and 11 digs in the match. Noelle Foster again led the Lions in kills, finishing with 11 on .250 hitting.
As a squad, the Lions out blocked the Tigers, finishing with 11 total blocks while the Tigers could only manage to record seven stops at the net. Soah Franklin led Columbia at the net, finishing with five total blocks on three solo blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Over the first two sets, Princeton controlled the action and in the first set their .321 hitting gave them a 25-14 first set win. In the second set, the Tigers again hit solid, finishing with a percentage of .257 on route to a second set 25-15 win and a quick 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set however, the Lions decided to not go down without a fight and they battled the Tigers all the way until the end of the set. Unlike the previous sets, Columbia stayed with the Tigers past the halfway point, sticking with Princeton, despite their attempts to pull away.
As the score was sitting at 23-20, Emily Teehan smashed home a kill, and Stenglein took to the service line. She served Columbia to a pair of points on attack errors by Princeton's Elena Montgomery. The pair of Tiger errors tied up the score at put the score at 24-23 and a Teehan kill knotted up the set at 24-24.
But over the final two points, kills from Princeton's Julia Schner and Avery Luoma gave the Tigers the final two points needed to win the set, 26-24, and the match in straight sets, 3-0.
GAME NOTES: Stenglein recorded a double-double for the second-straight match … Columbia's 11 blocks were the second most recorded by the Lions this season.
VENUE POLICIES: Volleyball spectator attendance will be restricted to a limited pass list only due to University COVID protocols and in accordance with NYC Executive Order 225.
