5 THINGS TO KNOW:
1. LAST TIME OUT
Columbia is coming off a 78-56 season-opening victory over Hampton on Tuesday. The game was Columbia's first since March 7, 2020, marking 612 days between contests. Abbey Hsu led the Lions with 22 points (8-16 FG, 5-9 3FG) in the victory. Sienna Durr and Kaitlyn Davis scored 14 apiece. Newcomers Noa Comesaña, Jaida Patrick, Kitty Henderson and Nicole Stephens all scored their first points as a Lion in Tuesday's season opener. Comesaña, a first-year, started in her collegiate debut.
• Abbey Hsu went 5-of-9 from the perimeter, marking the fifth time in her career she's made at least five threes. It was fourth time she has shot 50 percent or better from the arc (min. 5 makes).
• Hsu's 22-point performance marked her fifth career 20-point game.
• Jaida Patrick had career-highs of four steals, five made free throws and six free throw attempts
• Columbia's 15 steals were its most since going for 23 in a 102-18 victory over Central Penn on Jan. 3, 2016.
• Columbia went 20-of-25 from the charity stripe, its most made free throws since Feb. 8, 2019 against Harvard.
• Hampton's 20 made free throws were the most against the Lions since Milwaukee (25-27) on Nov. 16, 2018.
• Six Lions made their Columbia debuts (Comesaña, Patrick, Stephens, Henderson, Lobon, Lauder). Five of the six made their collegiate debuts (Patrick transferred in from Duke).
• Columbia improved to 2-1 in the all-time series against Hampton.
3. TABBED THIRD
Columbia was picked third by the media in this year's Ivy League Preseason Poll. The Lions received 87 total votes to earn its highest preseason ranking in program history. The Lions received five more votes than Yale (82) and six more than Harvard (81) in what the media suggests will be a tight race for the top four qualifying spots in the 2022 Ivy League Tournament.
2021-22 Ivy League Women's Basketball Preseason Poll
Predicted Order of Finish (First-Place Votes)
1. Princeton (12) - 122
2. Penn (3) - 108
3. Columbia - 87
4. Yale - 82
5. Harvard (1) - 81
6. Cornell - 41
7. Dartmouth - 29
8. Brown - 27
4. UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Columbia is coming off a 2019-20 season in which it went 17-10 with an 8-6 Ivy League record to earn the right to attend Ivy Madness for the first time. The program's 17 wins and eight Ivy victories were its second-most since becoming a Div. I program in 1986-87. Along the way, the Lions won a program-best six consecutive Ivy League games, including three straight weekend sweeps. However, Columbia never got its postseason shot, as the Ivy League Tournament and subsequent 2020-21 season were all canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
5. THE OPPONENTS
DAVIDSON
• Davidson (0-1) played at No. 24 Virginia Tech in its season opener Tuesday night, falling to the Hokies by a final of 76-57. The Wildcats fell behind 21-5 at the end of the first quarter but did outscore Virginia Tech 35-30 in the second half. Adelaide Fuller led the Wildcats with 15 points (6-11 FG), while Chloe Welch came up with a game-high 10 rebounds.
• Davidson is coming off a 9-14, 5-10 A-10 campaign in 2020-21, in which they advanced to the second round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
• Davidson's roster consists of seven returners who combined for over 8,000 minutes played throughout their careers. Senior captain Cassidy Gould has the most on-court experience in her tenure, totaling 2,339 minutes played and averages 27.5 minutes of action per game. Suzi-Rose Deegan also returns to the 'Cats with an Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Third Team selection, despite appearing in just 10 games last season due to injury. During the 2019-20 campaign Deegan made a splash among the league, garnering an A-10 Rookie of the Year nod at the conclusion of the season.
• Columbia is 1-1 all-time against Davidson. The Lions won the last meeting, 63-60, on Dec. 9, 2019 in New York. Prior to that, the two teams hadn't met since December of 1996, a game which Davidson won down in North Carolina, 77-59.
CLEMSON
• Clemson (1-0) began its season Wednesday night with a 64-47 victory over USC Upstate. Newcomer Daisha Bradford scored a game-high 16 points on 7-for-8 shooting from the floor, including 2-2 behind the arc.
• The starters tallied 52 of the Tigers' 64 points, as Delicia Washington (14 points), Amari Robinson (12 points), and Kiara Lewis (10 points) joined Bradford in double-figures. Freshman Eno Inyang had four points, a game-high 10 rebounds and a game-high four blocks in her debut.
• The Tigers welcome back three starters from a season ago, including graduate Delicia Washington who earned preseason All-ACC honors and ended the 2020-21 season being named Second Team All-ACC, WNIT All-Region, and led the Tigers in scoring and assists.
• Clemson will also add graduate transfers Kiara Lewis (Syracuse) and LaTrese Saine (SEMO) and junior college transfer Daisha Bradford, who will immediately impact. Lewis was a First-Team All-ACC selection in 2019-20 and an honorable mention selection last season at Syracuse.
• Saine was the 2020-21 OVC Defensive Player of the Year and became the all-time blocks leader at SEMO her senior year.
