Columbia Drops Finale at No. 16 Princeton, 5-1

Ellie Decker scored the lone Lions' goal in the fourth quarter
PRINCETON, N.J. - No. 16 Princeton took down the Columbia field hockey team, 5-1, Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale for both squads. The Lions wrap up the 2021 season at 8-9 overall and 1-6 in Ivy League play. Senior goalkeeper Alexa Conomikes made 11 stops in the defeat.
The Tigers (10-7, 6-1) were held off the scoresheet in the first quarter after a strong effort from Conomikes, who turned away four attempts on target on three corner opportunities. However, Princeton struck three times in the second to grab the lead at the break. Sammy Popper started things off on a reverse chip off a corner in the opening minute of the frame. Claire Donovan doubled the advantage in the 27th minute on a tip-in and Sam Davidson capitalized on a penalty stroke just before intermission.
In the third, Hannah Davey provided more insurance with a hard shot for her first of the season to extend the advantage to 4-0.
Columbia broke up the shutout bid in the 54th minute when Ellie Decker converted after Anabelle Brodeur shoveled a centering pass that snuck behind the defense for a tap-in goal. The marker was Decker's fifth of the year, tying her for the team lead with Kelsey Farkas. Princeton restored the four-goal cushion on a Grace Schulze goal in the 58th minute.
The Tigers held a 24-6 edge on shots and posted 10 corners, compared to just two for the Lions. Brodeur led Columbia with a pair of shots.
