5 THINGS TO KNOW:
1. WHERE THEY RANK
• Columbia and UMass both come into the game in the midst of a good non-conference season. Both teams sit inside the top 100 of the NCAA women's basketball NET rankings. Columbia is right at 100, while UMass entered Friday sitting at No. 60. In the RPI, Columbia is an impressive No. 36, while UMass ranks No. 56. Columbia will be looking for its first win against a team ranked inside the NET top 100 but is 8-0 against teams outside the top 100. Meanwhile, UMass is 2-2 against the NET top 100.
2. THE LATEST
• The Lions are coming off their most lopsided victory of the season, defeating 2020 MAAC champion Marist, 78-49, Sunday in Poughkeepsie. Three Lions registered a double-double, led by Kaitlyn Davis who had 18 points and 11 rebounds. The 29-point victory was Columbia's largest since Jan. 4, 2020 against Mercer (77-48).
• Following the victory over Marist and last Thursday's win over Delaware, junior Kaitlyn Davis was named Ivy League Player of the Week. Davis averaged 13.5 points and 10.5 rebounds on her way to the honor and shot 54 percent from the field. The 6-foot native of Noralk, Connecticut was later named to the NCAA Women's Basketball Starting 5 for her performance. She has been named Ivy Player of the Week twice this season. 3. DOUBLE-DOUBLE TRIO
• Kaitlyn Davis (18-11), Kitty Henderson (12-10) and Jaida Patrick (11-10) all recorded double-doubles in Columbia's 78-49 victory at Marist. It marked just the second occasion this season in NCAA Div. I women's basketball that three players from the same team all recorded a double-double. The other belongs to Texas State, who did so in a 93-23 win over Arlington Baptist (NCCAA) on Nov. 29. There was just one known instance last season, which was accomplished by South Carolina when they put together four double-doubles against College of Charleston on Nov. 15, 2020.
• Columbia is the first Ivy League team to accomplish the feat since Brown on Dec. 31, 2018 in a 109-102 double overtime defeat against Northern Illinois. 4. REUNITED
• UMass head coach Tory Verdi will return to Levien Gymnasium for the first time since the 2004-05 season, when he assisted the Lions and was named the interim head coach later that year. Verdi went 3-7 in his 10 games as interim head coach. He and Columbia head coach Megan Griffith were both part of that 2004-05 team, which was Griffith's sophomore season as a player at Columbia
5. ABOUT THE MINUTEWOMEN
• UMass (9-2) dropped its first game to an unranked opponent on Wednesday, falling at home to Boston College, 66-60. Sam Breen and Ber'Nyah Mayo had 14 points apiece. Destiney Philoxy followed close behind with 13 points and a career-high three blocks on the night. Breen and Angelique Ngalakulondi came down with a team best eight boards. Breen leads the team in scoring at 17.9 points per game and averages a double-double of 11.5 rebounds. Sydney Taylor (15.2) and Phhiloxy (11.6) also average double figures. Breen ranks No. 2 in the Atlantic 10 in both points and rebounds per game. Her seven double-doubles rank No. 2 nationally.
• UMass boasts the A-10's top scoring offense (73.0 ppg) and also leads the conference in rebounding. Their total rebounds (486) are tops in the country, while their rebounding margin (+12.4) and rebounds per game (44.18) each are top 25.
