Women's Tennis Wins Three Titles at Columbia Invite

At Columbia Invitational, Shivani Amineni wins the Buffalo Bracket; Jennifer Kerr/Amineni take the Doubles C Bracket, and Sophia Strugnell/Carolyn Brodsky win Doubles D Bracket.
FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y.—Columbia won three championships in its respective brackets this weekend as the squad began its 2021-22 season by hosting its annual Columbia Women's Tennis Invitational Friday through Sunday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Columbia junior Shivani Amineni claimed the Buffalo Bracket title with three consecutive victories. She won a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Penn's Iris Gallo for the title. Columbia also won two doubles titles over the weekend. Senior Jennifer Kerr and Amineni paired up to win the Doubles C championship with three straight wins, along with a 6-4 title match victory over Lions teammates in first year Clarine Lerby and junior Michelle Xu. Columbia also won the Doubles D competition as first-years Carolyn Brodsky and Sophia Strugnell teamed for three wins and a 6-4 title match victory over a duo from Penn.
Columbia also had several other finalist finishes. In singles, sophomore Julia Haynes (Bronx Bracket), Lerby (Westchester Bracket), Xu (Rochester Bracket), and Raiszadeh (Long Island) all made it to the finals of their respective competitions. In doubles, Sacha Wood and Haynes teamed for a finalist finish in the Doubles A Bracket.
On Friday, the first day of competition, Columbia went undefeated and won all of its singles and doubles matches.
Players representing 12 schools competed at the three-day event, including Columbia, Charlotte, Cornell, Hofstra, LIU, Maryland, NJIT, Penn, St. John's, Syracuse, Wisconsin, and Yale.
An Intercollegiate Tennis Association sanctioned event, the Columbia Invitational featured several flights of singles and doubles competition. Hosted by Columbia, all matches took place at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., home of the U.S. Open. More information on the center is located at this link.
