Columbia roars back to defeat Yale to remain perfect at home.
NEW YORK – For the second consecutive match, the 66th-ranked Columbia women's team failed to secure the doubles point. But once again, it did not matter as the Lions road back to win the match 4-3 over visiting Yale on Sunday afternoon at the Philip & Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center.
With the win, the Lions improve to 13-3 overall and are 3-0 in the Ivy League. The win also sees Columbia improve to 10-0 at home this year.
Yale (15-3, 2-1 Ivy) saw its six-match winning streak come to an end when Sophia Wang defeated Julia Werdiger on court three to clinch it for the Lions.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after securing the doubles point and a win on court six in singles play.
In the double play, Angela Huang and Werdiger defeated Michelle Li and Amber Yin 6-2 on court two. The duo of Orly Ogilvy and Leena Friedman came back to defeat Gayathri Krishnan and Sabrina Lin, 6-4, on court one.
Leading 1-0, Yale kept up the momentum with a straight-sets win on court six.
The Lions tied the match up 2-2 with back-to-back wins by Krishnan and Hui on courts No. 1 and No. 5. Krishnan defeated Ogilvy 6-3, 6-2, and Hui immediately followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Angela Haung on No. 5.
Yale's Shyla Aggarwal brought the Bulldogs one point closer to victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Michelle Li on court four.
Trailing 3-2, the Lions mounted their epic finish. First, Emily Baek finished off Friedman 6-3, 7-6(5) on court No. 2 to tie the match at 3-3. Baek led the tiebreaker 5-2 before Friedman tied it up 5-5. After a long rally, Friedman charged the net when Baek blasted a shot past her down the line to take a 6-5. The next point, Friendman hit a shot long to secure the point and the match for Baek.
On court three, Wang fell behind early, with Werdiger taking the first set 7-5. Wang rallied back to take the second set 6-2. In the third set, Wang jumped out to an early 2-1 lead, but Werdiger broke serve to take the game up 2-2. Momentum appeared to be on the Bulldogs' side, as Werdiger took the lead 5-4. From there, Wang took control, coming back to win the set and the match 7-5.
Columbia returns to action on Friday, April 10, when it hosts Penn. That match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. first serve.
